| Quote: Pepe "Steve Mac is a lovely bloke but, as a coach, he's totally gash!
He has one method of play - 5 drives and a kick - and if that doesn't work, he's clueless. He'll just stand there with his arms crossed looking all stern and serious. At the end of the game he tell you how he knows what went wrong and will put it right in training. He won't say what he thought the problem was, or what he's going to do in training, so you'll be non the wiser.
Before the next game you'll hear how hard they've been working in training and how they won't make the same mistakes as last time - which of course they do. Before you know it there'll be pictures in your local rag of the players training. This will include tying each other up with socks and wizzing along on water slides WEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
You will not be surprised to see a completely disorganised mess of a defensive line, with most of the team stood under the posts looking frightened and the inevitable try that will be scored by any team with even a rudimentary ability to pass and kick and run. The attack won't be much better organised either. So 5 drives and a kick it is then. He is totally incapable of building a proper squad and just picks who played well against his team the previous season, no matter what position they play. He'll just play them out of position if he has to. So you'll end up with 8 back rowers and just one prop forward. He'll realise the error he's made, and try to recruit loan players to put it all right. It won't make much difference though. They'll still be totally disorganised and playing 5 drives and a kick.
Because the players know that Steve is a soft touch, most of them wouldn't have bothered turning up for training, so what little game plan he has will not be instilled in them. So they'll have no idea what they are doing or how they figure in the great 5 drives and a kick masterplan. So they just lumber about the pitch in a pathetic attempt to please. Occasionally they will succeed. But mostly they won't.
As a fan you'll be bored, and as it goes on, angry. That anger will simmer into outrage, with lot's of ant-Mac abuse from surrounding supporters - with less and less of then turning up - it will curdle into a sullen, silent discontent.
Fortunately for Barrow You have:
(a) Already ticked the box
(b) Already have a good squad recruited
(c) At least have a great kicker - Jamie Rooney - who might actually make 5 drives and a kick work
(d) Have a chairman who, for once, will do the right thing early and sack the useless c*nt.
HTH
Now I am very very worried !!

| I wonder if he also still has a penchant for playing 2nd rowers and loose forwards at prop?

You should have stuck with Dave Clark, but then who am i to question crazy Des's judgement? Good luck, you'll need it.

| I think it's bizarre that Dave Clark gets coach of the year and they gets demoted, if I was Clark I'd have been out the door a long time ago.
I actually think McCormack is a decent coach, I wasn't disappointed to see him leave Widnes as he couldn't take us as far as we'd like to go. But for Barrow with how far they've come in 2 years it's a good appointment. People have jumped on the McCormack bandwagon far too easily without looking at what he has achieved. This '5 drives and a kick' description is a load of rubbish for me, Gateshead weren't playing that way, and if anyone has the DVD of Widnes' win over Haven in the Northern Rail Cup Final in 2007 it's the best we've played for a long time. Cas away in the league the same season. He has limitations, but he can get results. Hes got huge motivation now to do at Barrow what he didn't do at Widnes.

| And he had huge motivation to do at Widnes what he didn't do at Haven before that and Salford before that and with all the resources he needed to do it.
I actually like the guy but the way he set up the team this year was frankly bizarre and getting rid was the absolute right decision for mine.
Would you have him back over Paul Cullen??

I answered that question before you even asked it.

| My post had nothing to do with the decision to let McCormack go as Widnes coach, it was regarding the perception of him and how that relates to his new job at Barrow. They'll be a better side with McCormack and Clark rather than just Clark in my opinion.

Indeed you did.. apologies AJ... I still think it is a bizarre appointment. They do not seem to be a team that wants to rest on their laurels.. but I can't see this being anything other than a backward step.

| Clark is very good technically. He understands the game, he knows how to build a squad and he gets Barrow playing expansive rugby. It was his decision to move out of the head coaches position when he started to have issues around man management and motivational aspects of the job. Both issues purely down to his very short time in coaching, he has stated he wants to improve this aspect of his skills by learning from an experienced coach. Clarke has an agreed development plan with the club and will be back as head coach when he has the experience he believes he needs.

| In my opinion motivation is McCormac's biggest downfall. Frequently our team would come out half asleep. Don't think we got over this until we got Mick Cassidy as trainer.
