Tommy Sale might be best known as a Leigh legend but he was also the inspirational captain during Widnes' run to the Challenge Cup final in 1950. May I point anyone who would like to read about his years with the Chemics and much more to his newly-published autobiography. It is available online from Amazon as well as various outlets in Leigh including Leigh Centurions, Scrum Down Under (Railway Rd), C&D Books (Leigh Market) and Cannings (Spinning Gate, Leigh).

Is that a picture of him playing for Widnes on the cover?

Looks like it could be the 1950 semi against Bradford.

Spot on! It was indeed the 1950 Challenge Cup Semi Final against Bradford at Central Park.

He talks about that game and his time at Widnes in general in an interview I did with him yesterday on

Am I right in thinking that John Sale who played 160+ times for Widnes was his brother?

Did John play for Leigh as well?

Correct again! John is his brother and he too played for Widnes many times as you said. I couldn't say for certain whether John played for Leigh but I'm seeing Tommy tonight so I will ask the question.

Thanks for that. I've got Mike Latham's book somewhere of all Leigh players (up til the early 1990s when it was published) but can't put my hands on it at the minute.
