Quote: Pepe "I may be going against the grain in this thread, but I think Leigh had little choice but to plan for a team playing in the Championship. Especially as next season will be sh/t or bust for several clubs who wish to make a bid. It wasn't clear that they'd go down until the last day, so I do have some sympathy with their position.
Obviously, allowing them a full Championship salary cap in Championship 1 would be wrong, but perhaps some sort of smaller dispensation would be appropriate. Maybe an extra £50k would be enough for them to be able to pay some of their big name players and still have enough to recruit a decent squad?'"
Don't get me wrong, I do have a lot of sympathy for Leigh. Particularly their long suffering fans. It's just, people are saying they didn't know they would be relegated, which is true, but it was always a possibility. They should have prepared for the possiblity better. It strikes me that they are going to benefit from bad preperation. What if a team at the bottom of the league for most of the season with a mathematical possibility of staying up but little chance did the same? And at what point do you say, let this team have a bit of a leg up they've made a mistake?
I just feel it is Leigh's fault and they shouldn't be able to benefit from it. If they're allowed, they will waltz the league unopposed. We're all fed up of the uneven playing fields we are constantly being presented with in RL and this would be a similar issue for teams in Championship 1. Although having said that, Leigh fans will feel it was an uneven playing field which relegated them in the first place so I wouldn't expect much guilt, nor would I feel the same in their position. Just looking at it as someone who wished them well in their quest to stay up, it feels wrong that a team might get a huge let off just because they have overspent.
We didn't expect the RFL to play for Peachey did we? His arrival caused us problems, no doubt.
