Posting this for the benefit of any Widnes supporters in the area who have kids/grandkids who might be interested in trying RL.

Chester Gladiators RLFC is hosting a Rugby League event on Saturday 21st March specifically for children aged 8 to 16 years old.

The Try Rugby League junior taster session is designed to offer youngsters in Cheshire and north Wales a an enjoyable introduction to the sport of Rugby League.

The event, which is free of charge, is being staged on Saturday 21st March at Christleton High School and will run from 11.00 AM until 1.00 PM. Qualified coaches will help deliver a session focusing on the core skills of Rugby League, with lots of fun games along the way.

The event is being supported by Super League outfit Warrington Wolves RLFC and we hope to be joined on the day by representatives of the Wolves, including their infamous mascot Wolfie! Warrington have also kindly agreed to provide some free match tickets for children taking part and have also donated a family ticket for a Super League fixture which will be raffled on the day.

We are also hoping to organise a number of follow up sessions to the Try Rugby League event in and around Chester. At present we currently operate an U12's team in the Midlands Junior Rugby League but also hope to be able to operate teams at U10, U14 and U16 in 2009.

As a club we genuinely believe that local youngsters deserve the chance to try their hand at as many sports as they wish and these sessions will provide many children with the chance to gain their first ever experiences of the fast and thrilling sport that is Rugby League.

If you cannot make this event but wish to register your interest or if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact Jim Green via info@chestergladiators.com or on 07899 717829.

The grant of £6,492 will be used by the club to deliver a junior coaching programme in a number of Chester schools over the next twelve months. In addition the funding will allow a number of the clubs volunteers to gain formal UKCC coaching certificates as well as financing the purchase of new kit and equipment.

"This is fantastic news for everybody connected with the club,” said Chairman Jim Green.

“We worked really hard on our application and we are extremely grateful to Awards for All for their support. The costs of running a sports club increases year on year and this grant is extremely welcome.”

“The Try Rugby League project will allow us to introduce local youngsters to the game and those who wish to play competitively will be more than welcome at our club,” said Green.

“Our first year in existence has seen us make huge advancements both on and off the field. We are all hugely excited about what the next twelve months will bring.”

Chester Gladiators next fixture is on Saturday 16th May when the open age team entertain Crewe & Nantwich Steamers at Hare Lane in a match that kicks-off at 2.30 PM. Both the junior and senior sections train on Thursday evenings (6.15 PM – 7.15 PM) at Hare Lane and new players are always welcome.
