| Roy Holdstock stated in his testimonial booklet many years ago that when he made his "A" team debut, he noticed the oppositions full back was knocking on a bit and thought he would havea run at him, being full of youthful exhuberance. It turned out to the be hardest, bonecrunching tackle he ever recieved.
The full back concerned was a certain Arthur Keegan.

| Quote: boro_boy "My first memory of hull hardmen was back in the day just before we re-emerged as a contender around '75, names like Alan Wardell, Tony Duke, Tony Banham, Len Casey ,our scrum half kenny Foulkes was a very tough little fella. Seems like there was an all-in fist fight every other game at the Boulevard in those days.
Most of the Paul Woods stories I would vouch for, but I do remember an incident one time at Widnes I think 80-81, involving a very young and at that time unkown Andy Gregory , might even have been making his home debut, Very early in the game he chipped over the Hull defence and as Woods collected the kick, Gregory came through full force and hit Woodsy very hard, then pushed him as he played the ball. I was rubbing my hands at the prospect of Woodsy chasing down Gregory for the rest of the match, but to my surprise he didn't. Woodsy might have been having an off day, but equally it might say a lot about Gregory too.
By my measure of 'hard' I would go with Charlie Stone, Trevor Skerrett, Paul Rose, Mick Harrison,Ronnie Wileman'"
I'm surprised Banham never came up earlier in the thread.

| If any younger fans want to see Tony Banham in action should watch 'Another Bloody Sunday'.
Have a look on youtube, its there in four parts.
Shows Rugby League at its best!

| I might have the name wrong but didn't Peter Spring play for us for a couple of seasons. When he arrived he was overweight and a bit rubbish thinking he was here for an easy ride - I think he carried the ball into a tackle against Wigan and was punched in the top of the head and it took him a few games to recover. But then, if I've got the right man, he started training like a demon, broke all the clubs weight-lifting records and really put it about on the pitch. I know I'm being a bit vague but I'm pretty sure he turned out to be a fans favourite and was an FC Hardman.

Tony worked as a bouncer at Henry's on Anlaby Road.
One night, walking home from town circa 1am, I passed Henrys
and a guy was thrown out the club, but thrown in the air over a lot of descending steps ,
the guy landed in the middle of Anlaby Road.
Nobody messed with Tony!!

Did he not also run Shire Horse or bounce there at least?

| How about Adam Maher - i think sometimes the hardmen are the ones were opposition players are intimidated to even try to start something - and after Maher launched about 20 punches into Lomax (Huddersfield) in about 10 seconds I think that definitely helped!

Christ - that place was so rough the bouncers offered you weapons when you went in!
