| Quote: antipope "I always preferred david brooks to terry regan, a tackling machine. Regan also cost us a trip to wembley when he played the ball to himself on the last tackle in the 0-0 semi v halifax, with gary pearce waiting to pop a simple drop goal over with a couple of minutes left.'"
Don't normally split hairs but it was Scott Gale who played the ball to himself with Porky waiting for glory behind him

He was and helped drag a bottom of the table side into the top four. Coleman and Gary Pearce were a more then useful half back combo back in the day.

| I’m glad I started this thread; the comments people have made have brought back some good memories. However I’m shocked I’d forgotten about Craig Coleman and Des Hasler and although I’ve been a fan for over 40 years, for the life of me I cannot remember Fili Seru or Hitro Okesene!
The original team I suggested was a hypothetical team based on how they played for us or their careers elsewhere. On this basis and to finish this off here’s who I think were/are the Best of the Rest -
Hasler (didn’t he play both full back and scrum half for us?),
Cleal (but not sure whether as a threequarter or a forward), Vaikona, Solal, Liddiard, Domic, Brad Webb, Matt Sing, Blacklock, Gale
Mackey, Entat (probably the best overseas half back pairing), Coleman
Logan, Berrigan, Folkes, Motu Tony (personally I’d have played him at hooker – he’d played there for New Zealand so that should have been good enough for us – and not bought Berrigan, good though he is, and kept Briscoe).
Maher, McMenemy, Muggleton, Grimaldi, Divet, Manu
Lots of good wingers to choose from and not so many centres and similarly lots of good back rowers and not so many props; the latter is one area where Rovers probably made better overseas signings i.e. Beetson and Broadhurst.

Surely on pure ability and world status at that time, it would have to be Peter Sterling wouldn't it ??

| HullWhiteStar - I started this thread off with a hypothetical best team of overseas players and Peter Sterling was in that.
I did consider Stanley Gene, but in what position would you say he was up there with the best?

| Gary lester was one of the most underrated players for me. Thought he did a good job in a very crap team for the first two seasons of super league. Never got any protection from our forwards, allways came off the pitch black and blue!
Best overseas player for me though without doubt Richard swain. Tackled like a demon, hit well above his weight. Also his distribution from the play of the ball was so quick and accurate it gave cookie and Horney all the time they needed too cause havoc in attack.
Also challenge cup final!!!

| Greenhill was like McMenemy; you didn't realise what he did until he wasn't there. Contribution for every minute they were on the pitch was enormous.

| Well here is another hooker to think on Ray Owen only here one season but as hard as nails.
When Bradford had a good pack with Ramshaw and Clawson in second row he terorised them after some one hit him in the scrum.

| Greenhill was a solid prop and hard as nails! Cant remeber who he flattened once... Im sure it was a Saints player, and then another saints player broke their arm in a tackle against him.
Stephen Kearney had the biggest influence on the club I'm sure. Brought an unseen level of professionalism to our club in all aspects.
