| IMO but from a Hull FC pov, Sammut would be alright. Not that much better than Obst, who wouldn't use your last non-fed spot, though. Chase would be brilliant - it'd take a big fee you'd assume but he is real class and would represent a long-term (at least partial) solution to your hb issues.

Sammut and Obst as an example would give us what we need as a squad though... cover in the halves and 9.

I dont believe for one minute that Hetherington scoured the market for a half back, couldnt find one so said bugger it lets sign a backrower instead. That would indicate a lack of strategy, which for all her faults she cannot be accused of.

Everybody in the game has known that Hull have been looking for a half back since the end of last season. Therefore i reckon that Agents will have offered Hull every out of contract and want-away half back in the world of Rugby League. With that in mind would Hull really be in discussions with Crusaders to sign a reasonable/middle of the road scrum half at this late stage for what is likely to be a large transfer fee? Unlikely in the extreme.
It is more likely that Hull identified their target early and have been in discussions since to manoeuvre his release from his current club. I am pretty sure Rangi Chase is your man.'"
Chase is very much on the radar but it will hard top secure a deal, Cas have already lost Shenton and Westerman so will dig their heels in over Chase. Chase and Sammutt are both options but neither are easy deals to pull off, Chase would be the better option but a deal for Sammutt would be easier, although still tough.
I'll be happy with either, I think someway or another we will bring in one of them and a back hopefully.

Cover for 1 as well in Sammuts case not to be underestimated with Tanseys behaviour last season...

A player we should never have signed, we'd just got rid of the bad apples too!

True - they'd fill the hole. I wouldn't be envious in quite the same way though. Mind you, the prospect of Obst beating 7 Rovers tacklers inside 4 metres in a black an white strip would be a bit depressing. That one try probably accounts for our dominating the missed tackle charts.
Reckon you might get someone from the fringes of an NRL team yet.

It could 'also' be that (being strapped for cash) they will want to sell as many season passes as possible, before announcing selling one of their best players.
Same could be said for Cas!

It's possible, but likewise, would FC not want a boost in pass sales from signing a player?
In fact, maybe the Berrigan announcement wasn't so much short notice from him, as deliberate as it would have affected pass sales?

Its a sad state of affairs though if you have to compromise on your choice of half back so that you have cover in case your full-back goes off the rails again.

No it wouldnt. The strategy would clearly be demonstrated, the implementation of the strategy would be lacking but through no fault of the club. If the players just aren't out there there's nothing we can do about that. You seem intent from your arguement to aportion blame to our board/coach for not recruiting a half back. I'm disappointed that we haven't but logical thinking would lead me to a place whereby i have to beleive we tried. Logically we wouldnt to go without but then logically we wouldn't want to be held to ransom or sign the wrong player.

FC can and do rely on the blind loyalty of the 18th man.

What's to say it's a compromise? Isn't it just an added bonus if our choice of halfback can play 1 if we need it?

I wouldnt say it is a compromise because the attributes Sammut have I feel are what Hull need in the halves. If anything it is a bonus to have a talented player who can offer cover if needed in other positions.
