He is the best available,at this time.
Some of Smith's pupils are, Daniel Anderson,Tony Smith,Trent Robinson,Nathan Brown,Jason Taylor,Justin Morgan and Mick Potter.
Why go for the pupil, when you can have the teacher.
In my opinion,IF Gentle goes, we need someone who is proven & experienced, at building a solid structure & foundations for years to come, coupled with drilling basic core skills into existing players - this is not the time for another unproven Head Coach.'"
I think its significant that he hasn't got another NRL berth after being sacked by the Roosters.
I would also suggest that some of the pupils have gone on to be better and more successful coaches than their teacher.
Also question marks over his age. At 59 would he willing to come back to the UK for a third time and how long would he be willing to stay?
I do however agree with you that if Gentle goes we do need a proven Head Coach.

| Quote: Chris71 "For me the jury is still out on PG. However I would think he has been an instrumental figure in reorganising the club in terms of junior set up, training facilities etc with SM & AP.
We were always going to playing catch up and will do for a few years yet until we have an academy that is churning out the first team players like Leeds, Wigan, Saints. Plus it appears that the same structures are now in place throughout the club set up so players can move up much easier and slot in.
Will getting rid of PG put us in a better position? Not sure it will to be honest.
Looking at the season as whole so far we started poorly, lost Ellis & Holdsworth the 2 marquee signings for a considerable length of time. Then lost Horne who had rolled back the years, brought in a very inexperienced HB in Miller who has shown he will be a good addition and was thrown in due to necessity. The loss of Manu & Moa and the lack of equivalent replacements for them has also been evident this season.
What will be a vital issue is who we bring in this close season as unless the players are genuine quality in the forwards we will really be found wanting next season.
The player recruitment this off season is more important than ever with us losing O'Meley, Briscoe, Galea and possibly Lynchy, as we still need to adequately replace Manu & Moa.'"
This pretty much sums up my thinking and why I believe Gentle should get another year.

I believe he had enough of the NRL, if he came to us, I'd insist he appointed an assistant coach to inherit the structures instilled ,and to continue in the same fashion.
IMO, A lot of players in the squad, need serious one-one coaching in decision making, decoy runners, passing technique. etc.
I watched Salford at the KC a few weeks, ago, their passing,off-the ball movement, was superior to us.(same as KR)
Noble has only been there 3/4 months, I know they lost, but at least you can see improvement. in attack.

Very good post. PG will be here next season whatever happens in the playoffs, next season will determine his fate longer term.

Good post. I'm on the fence re gentle. He's had some misfortune with injuries but seemingly we still have the same fundamental flaws we have had for years. Has to have a really good start to next season for me or he'll be gone

| Just keep rememdering the first half against Leeds at home.
We were SOOO slick & incisive, dummy runners, pinpoint passing & a brutal defence. I really thought we had turned the corner - can't believe the disintegration of the progress that was so evident that night.
Keep wondering about potential unrest in the squad ?
Still no update on Tom Briscoe ?

| I'd stick with PG for next season. We need some stability and there have been enough signs this season, that we can compete. No reason to get rid of Gentle. Last season we came 6th and 5th/6th/7th/8th plus Wembley would have been deemed progress by most at the stat of the season. I would however expect Top 5 plus a Cup Run, to be delivered
In the event he did move on, I'd have Bri Smith back to tomorrow. It would be unfinished business. He was a great motivator turning avearge club players like Andy Dannatt and Paul Eastwood into GB Internationals within a season.

I don't think there is unrest in the squad, the team seem to be playing for each other and putting the effort in.
its the complete lack of an attacking game and basic errors (not just at Wembley all season) that are my biggest concerns.

I would see a poor cup final defeat plus an 8th place finish as a very disappointing season.

| Seb your default position is to moan and look on the downside! You wouldn't want success, if you ever had it it would be the wrong success.
You go missing when things are looking good and as soon as it takes a down turn your straight back "I told you we were !".
Everybody who has only met you on here can't believe you're a Hull fan.
