Whatever. It may have been a "far from awesome" team but we made it to the GF. Some people are never satisfied!!! Horne was in excellent form that season as well...
I rated Kear and he did some excellent things like get a kicking coach and sign Danny brough. He guided us to the CC victory and the year after we made the GF with Sharpe.
When Cooke left it went in decline IMO'"
People so easily forget that during Kear's tenure our league form and playing style were no better than they are now, and in some ways not as good. Winning the CC was a great achievement but it did serve to mask some underlying flaws.
The team that reached the GF did so on the back of some outstanding individual performances, not least by Horne. That doesn't make it an 'awesome' team. An awesome team would have won the GF or at least got somewhere close. There was a core of players that could have been built on and maybe turned into a team that could regularly challenge, but unfortunately the Kear legacy coupled with continuing poor recruitment and retention during Sharp's tenure meant that we went backwards instead.
Losing Cooke was an accelerator to our decline, not the root cause.'"
Perhaps 'awesome' was the wrong word, but it was the best side we had assembled since 85 in my opinion, some fantastic individuals all at the top of their game, Cooke, Horne, Swain, Yeaman to name but a few, who could forget the 27-26 victory at Knowsly road that season, one of the best team performances i have ever seen in my 30 odd years of following Hull. the club sholuld have built on that but we never, Sharps recruitment was poor for 07 and 08,

Yeaman was in electric form up until he got injured around halfway through the season (or was it sooner?). He's never got close to that form since.
IMO the 2004 side was better, and if not for an injury crisis at the business end of the season would have been in with a real chance of challenging for the title.

04 side was a quality side. we scored more points that season than any other in SL, 843. In 06 though our highest finish of 2nd, been a steady decline on that front since, a measly 502 in 09 and a slight improvement of 569 last year.

Wouldn't go that far. Kear's team was very unbalanced with all our attacking done on the left, but we still played more inventive/adventurous rugby when going down that side than we do on either flank now.

This board was full of complaints about our boring style of play in the league, both during the 05 season and for the early part of 06 up until he was sacked. I guess these things are all relative, mind.
