| Quote: PAUL M "With the ball he looked really good. His one on one defence was shocking and he got constantly out muscled by his oppposing winger and as a result let in two tries.'"
Plenty of wingers have been out muscled by their opposite number this season. Indeed Broughton has done it to other wingers this very season. The fact he got the better of Reece in his first ever SL game was not evidence that Reece isn't ready for SL it was simply evidence that an experienced winger got the better of an inexperienced one as he has done to more experienced wingers this season.
Also it wasn't one on one defence. He usually had at least one other defender helping him and the winger still scored.

| True test of a player is how they improve from their mistakes, Lyne has not had the chance to give an improved performance yet.

| I'm struggling to see where this keep Calderwood don't sign Meli arguement is coming from. IMO opinion I'd take Meli everytime and just to back it up I'll throw in a few stats ( I know!!).
In the past 5 seasons (including this one to date) Calderwood has played 81 games and scored just 23 tries, Meli has played 105 games and scored 67 tries. If either of the two are in decline it's Calderwood by some distance, the last time he got into double figures was back in 2005. Meli has this season so far has equalled his best return in SL and there is still someway to go yet, he'll score 20+ no problem.

| You could also say that Calderwood have very few opportunites last year with us. Also he was at Wigan when they were at their lowest ebb. Meli on the other hand was with a high flying Saints team so the stats are always going to be skewed in his favour.

You could probably argue that the clubs they have both played for have had a significant bearing on their try scoring records. I'd keep Calderwood (if fit) for his attitude and the fact that he's British. He's a very good try scorer, but like any winger he needs the service. That being said, I wouldn't be upset with us signing Meli if Calderwood doesn't prove his fitness and Meli was the best available replacement.

Yeah i appreciate that but the facts are clear to me over which player is the better of the 2, and the fact that Meli has been employed by St's for the past 5 seasons also tells it's own story. Calderwood is finished sadly IMO and certainly doesn't deserve a contract extension with us, he's managed just 22 games for us and scored 6 tries.

| 22 games the majority in a side that struggled to get the ball past the second row never mind to the centres or wingers.

Look I have nothing against Calderwood in fact I like his attitude but IMO Meli is the superior player and I want the best we can get of those available, so it's Meli for me. His performance at the KC was everything I like to see in a winger, strong, fast, aggressive and dominant plus 4 tries.

Most of those games were last year when he was voted the fans' player of the year. He's had an awful time with injuries this season, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's finished.
As regards Meli, Saints seem to have a habit of getting rid of players at the right time. You have to ask why they're not renewing his contract.

Meli has averaged 23 league starts over the past 4 full seasons how is that injury prone?

So is that a reason to keep Calderwood!!! Who has been released by both Leeds and Wigan.

I dont know the full stats but how many has he missed in the last 18 months?
I'd rather we stuck with youth and played either Lyne or Hall.
Personally next year i'd move Tom Briscoe to the right wing and play Hall on the left wing. Lyne as backup.

Like I said, I'd only keep Calderwood if he could get back into the side and show the form that won him so many plaudits last year. When Calderwood was released by Leeds and Wigan, he was a lot younger than Meli is now. Saints don't usually get rid of players who have been in their side for the last 5 years without good reason.
