Not only that, but you're potentially shutting out talent.
Quote: Rock God X "So any company that has volunteers aren't looking good?
Isn't that part of the skills necessary in the job to gain? You'll find that many people would rather do something than nothing. You'd be short changing them by not getting them involved as much as possible and helping them possess them skills. Watching only achieves so much.
Says who?! I've never met an employer with that attitude at all.
Employers look at how you've spent your time. If you've spent 6 months in unpaid work then you've spent 6 months getting experience. If you've spent 2 weeks volunteering and 5 months doing nothing then what impression will that have? An internship is very much like an apprenticeship. Gives you the experience you need to do the job and puts you in a great position to get the job. It helps people get jobs, and to say it makes companies look like they're getting "free labour" and that they won't look good of it shows a complete lack of understanding of employment IMO.
If you can't afford it, you don't do it. It's as simple as that. There are all sorts of professions, careers, training, etc. that people simply cannot afford without being from a wealthy background. That's just life unfortunately. Unless you can tell me who is going to foot the bill for the intern to be paid or trained (if the company cannot afford it) then you're basically saying it's better to not have the opportunity at all because some people might not be able to afford it than it is to offer something that can gain a select few people a set of skills.'"
We have to deal with the World as it is, rather than as we'd wish it to be - so if the only way to get experience is to work unpaid, you might hold your nose and accept that. All I'm saying is whenever anybody offers you a great opportunity, whatever it is, have a good hard think about whether it really is. I might be cynical, but if anybody thinks the intern system is [inever[/i exploitative, then that is naive. This particular one might be great - some are, and if you're not doing anything else, I guess they can be decent cv fodder. I stand by what I said about a month being enough though -maybe 2 at a real push. We get unsolicited requests from young people all the time, and occasionally in moments of weakness I'll let one come in and mildly inconvenience me for 2 or 3 weeks - I wouldn't want them for longer than that though, for their sake as well as mine.

It is.
Housing benefit, most of which is paid to people who are actually in-work, totals £16.94bn
Unemployment benefit totals £4.91bn
Now I realise, as you've said, that you're a busy man, too busy to take notice of what constitutes benefit spending but if employers actually paid their staff enough to live on, we could slash the housing benefit bill and with it, the Working Tax Credit bill (paid by HMRC and not included in the above figures).
So you're comfortable with the taxpayer subsidising landlords and cheapskate employers?

From today's Telegraph:
"The ONS also found that middle-class families and high earning households have been hit hardest by the recent economic downturn.
Britain's poorest families, by contrast, have seen their incomes rise over the same period because of increases in benefits."

People will be exploited in all forms of life at some point, even if they're paid a wage. It is each individual's responsibility to make their own judgement as to what's in their best interests. No one is forcing them to do anything, they have a choice.
What people seem to be wanting here (mainly cod'ead) is for their to be no choice. Shooting your mouth off and thinking that suddenly there will be this magical extra money to pay these people with isn't a solution at all, it's an illogical and poorly thought pipe dream. The simple fact is that many companies will either offer these unpaid internships (is it confirmed that it's unpaid yet?) or offer nothing at all. Paying them isn't on the list of options, not because they're greedy, but because there simply isn't any money!
I do see what you personally are saying, but your opening line saying that free labour doesn't look good is completely out of touch IMO... especially in the sports industry!

Most housing benefit paid to those in work? Can you point me to some evidence? Take your time today as I'll be out working but can have a read tonight

Not only do I not believe it I can prove it. My ESA benefit has not increased for the last 3 years. Oh, you get a letter with the breakdown of benefit, a component for ESA, a component for age, a component for being in the Support Group. They give you a 5% increase of one component, then reduce another component by the same amount thus leaving you with exactly the same income yet claiming you have had a 5% rise. ConDem by name...........
