| i remember going to a few man utd games when i was a student in 1985/86, we generally went to a game in the north west most saturdays as neutrals and must have gone to OT about 4 or 5 times. we went when man utd were on a 10 game winning run at the start of the season and against southampton they got a crowd of just over 50k. however the winning run faded away and just a couple of month later against ipswich the crowds were down to around 35k - even then you could see how the fans faded away when the winning runs did. they ended up mid table that season i think. it was also easy to get in - you didn't need a ticket - just turned up at the turnstiles paid a fiver and stood on the stretford end
what is interesting looking at the attendance stats is just how high the gap between the highest and lowest attendances were, especially in the 80s, something that doesn't really happen today - is this due to the big rise in season ticket sales?
anyone know why there were huge differences in man utd's highest and lowest attendances in the 1920s and 30s?

A guess, but before undersoil heating and modern floodlights, they sometimes had to do stuff like play re-arranged fixtures on a Tuesday afternoon, when most fans would be at work.

Its an English thing mate, anyone successful has to be knocked down, Phil Taylor currently, Steve Davis in the past, sure you could think of some more.

Is Hodgson the new Griffin, or is it all about pace?: |
|
| This thread must be one of the most boring for days!
......Manchester City's average at Maine Road in 1956 was just over 32,000.
Nice to think that Hull FC v Halifax in the 1956 Championship Final drew a crowd of over 60,000.
Try listening to rlGeoff Wright on Heartbreak at Maine Road, 1956.rl (Bottom left hand corner of page).
Anyone else there ?

I was there at the opposite end from where Hutton kicked the winning goal and was on the pitch as soon as the match finished. This started a great run for Hull as the team was Championship runners up in season 56/57,won it again in 57/58, followed by Wembley in 58/59 and 59/60. Went to all these matches.
I have only seen Man United play once in England - in 1962 against Benfica under lights in a friendly. There was a full stadium but cannot remember the attendance. Last July I went to see them play a friendly in Sydney which drew a full house of around 84,000. A couple of days before this game 10,000 paid to watch them train!

Now that's a good idea. I might give NH a call and ask him to think about this..........

Was a shame, it was a very good game maybe a draw would have been fair. But man utd always seemed to have the edge. I realy think the can go on & win the league.

Yes, I too saw all of those FC games. I was 14 when we played at Maine Road and had to watch the first few minutes on TV in someone's house as my dad had fallen and hurt his ankle. Like a good Hessle Roader, he limped to the ground and we were able to enjoy one of our club's finest days.
