Quote: cod'ead "Rather than who to drop, I'm more interested in his reasoning for playing Briscoe at fullback. That one is simply baffling'"

True, he was simply awful there last time round. Should have played Shaul. Other options, Horne and Whiting, were needed elsewhere.

Quote: carl_spackler "Well in previous years when underperforming players weren't dropped it was blamed on Kath. She's gone but IMO it's still a problem for us. Gentle reckoned he'd pick on form but I'm not convinced this is entirely the case.

So possibly the common factor is simply a lack of balls. Maybe it's as simple as getting a coach the players will have a healthy fear of, as the past few have all seemed a bit like soft touches.'"

Quote: me 'n' our kid "Someone asked what was the common factor, Richard Horne has been in our halves for so long now my grandson has grown up watching him and can tell me what he will do next. He is the most predictable player in SL by a country mile.
If you cant change how a player adapts to the game plan and just goes through the same old drop off pass and the most predictable short kick and dire long kick ever, he rarely pops up out of nowhere like all good half backs do, the last time he did was when he was running off the shoulder of Jason Smith.
Then change the player, because every coach in SL will hi-lite what he does and apply his structures accordingly.
Unfortunately our other halves are in dock and we have to stay with him, and I'm sure he will give 100% as he always has.
Has Nicklas blotted his copy book so bad with his tweets that he has been 'cast out' ??

Richard Horne has been a fantastic asset to this club, has provided so many good 'moments'.....he is not to blame for our team performance, but he is a factor of it...IMO'"

Horne was past his sell by date by 2007 but as he's from Hull and loves club, well hey let's sign him up for another year when he has 1 good game per year!

Problem is Horney is better now than Nicklas ever will be. Pity we can't bring a good young un through in that position but we can't.

He's not the future but plays his role OK when next to Holdsworth. It's a different type of player we need more. Good on him for salvaging a point for us today though - it certainly pleased me at least that we came back and got a point notwithstanding the fact I would have preferred two.

How far down the food chain do we go to lay the blame for that? Out of all the kids playing the game at school/youth/amateur level we cant find 1 !!!!!!!!!! Is it a consequence of the coaching systems and the coaches at youth level drumming into the kids 'keep your structure' and stifling talent and flair?
Harry Tyson-Wilson is the next 'superkid' and RU is sniffing around him now (so I'm told), we need talent and we need to nurture it not stifle it at a young age.

Quote: fcandy "He blamed pitch and conditions and injuries as excuse.

Brian noble is a name. Proven at this level.'"

No, he didn't. He said the conditions were atrocious to play in, but not the reason why we didn't win. He didn't give excuses, I don't think he ever really gives excuses apart from blaming his players' performances.

Quote: Kosh "Who last season deserved to be dropped and wasn't?

This season we arguably have an embarrassment of choices, but as Gentle himself realised after the Widnes game you can't drop them all.

I guess you could look at Galea, but it might be hard to drop a player who's scored 3 tries in the last 4 games. Lynch and Ogre maybe? We're already lightweight at prop. Who else amongst the older and more experienced players deserves the chop and isn't getting it?'"

Last year wasn't so bad, and slightly differing circumstances. We genuinely were threadbare, so I could understand it more. In an ideal world though, Horne and Yeaman would have had spells in the stand.

This year, at various stages the following have all been worthy of being dropped and escaped it:

Galea
Lynch
O'Meley
Whiting
Yeaman
Pitts (although he finally was left out of the squad until injury gave him a reprieve)

What I think makes it harder to swallow though, is that somebody like Green IS left out after one dip in performance despite probably being our best forward for the opening 4 rounds. It just makes it seem as though it's easier to leave out the younger, less experienced players than it is the older faces, regardless of who is the more deserving case. I just can't see that this breeds a healthy attitude amongst players.

Quote: fcandy "He blamed pitch and conditions and injuries as excuse.'"

Not in the transcript I've now read he didn't. He did say he was happy with a point given the conditions - something I don't agree with BTW - but he didn't use it to excuse the performance. In fact he criticised the performance.

Quote: fcandy "They finished 6 th last year and did nothing in cup, not competitive!'"

What's your definition of competitive?

Quote: fcandy "It is a top 4 squad, would prefer our squad to saints for example.'"

You seriously think we have a better squad than Saints? 4.13623046875:5
