| Quote: fun time frankie "paul woods was a hardman if the player was a little half back or a skinny winger good riddance'"
The first part of your post you are, of course, entitled to even though you are clearly incorrect but the "good riddance" bit, especially directed at someone who died of leukaemia at a relatively young age, is beyond belief.
My abiding memory of Woodsy was a game at Thrum Hall once. Halifax booted the ball downfield and Woods, as only he could do, returned it with considerable interest. He didn't look for a gap on the fringes or choose any of the backs to run at. Instead, he picked out their biggest prop and ran full pelt at him. The collision was astonishing, Woodsy slammed into the prop, knocking him back three or four yards but the impact took it's toll on him too. Both players needed attention over the next minute or so. He was certainly a player who had moments he would rightly be ashamed of but he had far more courage and heart than the vast majority of players I have ever seen.

| Of the current squad I'd say that it's Radford, his reputation for being able to handle himself precedes him and you don't see too many people having a go.
Paul Woods is a bit before my time but this thread's making him sound like an absolute legend.

Dave Hadfield did a good obit on him in the Independant. If Jim Mills is saying you're hard then you don't doubt it!

It is, apart from getting this bit spectacularly wrong"he became the first man to concede a potential "seven-point try" in the showpiece. Woods kicked the Hull Kingston Rovers winger, Steve Hubbard, after he scored, giving him an extra shot at goal from directly in front of the posts."
It wasn't Woodsy who gave away the 7-pointer, it was winger Graham Bray

Correct and IIRC it Bray punched Hubbard around the chops as he dived in.

Absolutement.
It should never have been a 7-pointer anyway because Bray lamped him after the try was scored and not while Hubbard was "in the act of scoring a try"

At least he never went round lamping bus drivers or kicking drunks while they're on the floor.
Paul was an absolute competitor who hated to lose. I remember sitting in The Albion after Leigh had knocked us out of the Premiership and while all the rest of the players were getting tanked up, Woodsy was looking angry in the corner. I went over and asked him what was up, he just nodded at his teammates and said: "look at 'em, you'd think we'd bloody won the trophy. We fooking lost, that's why I'm in a bad mood"
FYI a "cheap shot merchant" doesn't stand and face his opponent (or in Woodsy's case, stand and face his opponent's chest), a "cheap shot merchant" hits from behind and then runs & hides. If you want to see a modern-day "cheap shot merchant", you could do worse than study Ryan Bailey

| Woodsy NEVER did a cheap shot.
He would punch or stiff arm people yes, but he would then stand in front of them to see if they wanted to "take it further" !!
People like Bailey are just cowards and would pap themselves if Woodsy was still around.
I remember seeing his debut away at Blackpool in 1979 (around September). not that he did any dirty deeds that day but we had just never seen anyone in the shirt who looked so "up for it".
Don't get the message wrong - Woodsy had lots of games when he behaved himself - the cup semi v Widnes in 1980 being one of them - the played stand off that day because Newlove pulled out in the warmup and Woodsy played a cracker.
My abiding memory of is good side was in the floodlit final in 79 - from full back he ran on to a ball from the scrum and simply demolished Phil Hogan , before handing the ball to Graham Evans to score under the posts. They had to scrape Hogan off the pitch - remember he was a second row trying to stop a fullback !
I've got in on DVD and put it on youtube...

Feel free to come up some examples of these cheap shots. If you can't, may I suggest you take your deliberate flaming elsewhere?

| Its obvious Cod Head dosnt know the rules. the penalty is awarded for any offence commited during or after the try being scored, that is why the penalty is taken after the attempted conversion.
