It is another joke result of the constitutional mess that we're currently in. As it happens Scotland can't really afford it.

Well unlike the Tory Boys on here ...I think it is a disgrace, people have to pay through their teeth and have debt fround their necks before they even start work if they want to educate themselves to a higher standard in this country.

| Quote: Chris28 "If he had any actual power/influence and sought to use it in line with his party's manifesto that would be worth sympathy, but his position (along with the other LibDems in the cabinet) is pretty much worthless. What is he trying to change? He said no to tuition fees etc before May 2010, then the chance to jump into bed with Cameron came along and he abandoned his commitment straight away.
Sellout.
Still, I bet the car is nice, and his house will have state of the art security measures too. Result for Nick!'"
I heard some figures quoted on Radio 4, that the lib dems had 75% of their manifesto in the coalition agreement, and the conservatives only have around 60%...

either way he's fine, if he doesn't get a job paying more than £21k (probably nearer £23 by the time he graduates) then he'll pay nothing, if he gets a job earning £60k by the time he is 30 then he'll pay it back fairly quickly.

| Quote: Staffs FC "rlQ & A's on the Government's proposals on tuition feesrl'"
Quote: Staffs FC "Students taking three-year courses charged at £6,000 will leave university with about £30,000 of debt - if fees go up to £9,000, debts will be closer to £38,000.
The government says the lowest-earning 25% of graduates will pay less than they currently do. But most others will pay more - the highest earners almost double what they currently pay.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies says that, for about half of graduates, the plan is essentially a 9% graduate tax for 30 years, because they will not finish paying off the debt by the 30-year cut-off point.
Assuming fees of £7,500 for a three year degree, plus maintenance loans, its modelling shows that the top 10% of graduate earners will clear their debts, on average, in about 15 years. But a middle-earning graduate would need to earn, for example, an average of £48,850 a year for 26 years to pay off their debt.
The IFS also says about 10% of graduates will pay back, in total, more than they borrowed.'"
So much for the average student being better off. A 9% additional tax for the majority of your working life. What a fantastic incentive to improve yourself and contribute to your country's future prosperity.

The sooner we grant them independence the better. Saw the place off and float it out into the North Sea.

The problem is that many jobs that need a £9k/yr degree won't pay anything like £60k/yr. Most engineering jobs for example. Which means that people on lower salaries will end up paying more for their degrees than people on higher salaries. Farcical.

what difference does it make if I do or don't have a degree?
I bet you agree with the 50% tax band because you'll never have to pay it
(see, easy this baseless bat$hittery, isn't it)

Correct...let us consider Hull very few people earn £60k, the average earings in Hull are 23k.
People are also forgetting the majority of students often have to go into digs, they need to have money for bills, foods etc, unless they have parents who fund all this (most of us cannot afford to on our earnings), they then have to take out student loans....It is shambolic!
