I'm pretty sure your source was wrong on this one. There are 3 Cumbrians in the Leeds academy, but none are halfbacks. It certainly isn't McNally either, who signed for Huddersfield.

This lad was getting good reviews last year , I'd had a look at the Saints and Wigan squads to see how their academies looked for young halfbacks and backs in general after Charnley was picked up by KR and it was clear that if he was any good he'd have to wait a while for a chance at Wigan. Never seen him so don't personally know if he's any good. It was more the fact that Long is here as a mentor and maybe that could/should persuade young half backs to want to come to us.

Maybe. What's the harm in having 2 or 3 prospects? With recruitment of young British players being at a premium - Agar's words more or less - then I would have liked to think any good scrum half prospect that may be available would be targeted by us. Maybe he was? Maybe he's no good? We'll no doubt see in the next few years.

Yes, we definitely need more than one hope for halfback. I hope Niklas is the answer but I doubt it. By the time a halfback is 19, it's obvious whether they are good or not, and if they are not - no-one's going to turn them into a great half. Most of the Long mentoring/coaching/scouting stuff is the typical nonsense spoon fed to fans every year to keep us happy.

Long's contributions to us are beneficial on the field, in the media and with general promotional work. It is on the field we need him the most. The fact is that Long is the only 100% halfback in the squad, and we desperately need him to stay fit.

Nicklas looks good from what I've seen, although Washbrook playing 6, Anthony Thackray and especially Tommy Lee looked world beaters in the academy and stood out a lot more from what I remember and didn't quite make it, you need to have something really special to make a decent halfback I'm not sure he has this, he does look to have the skills to be a good halfback though so maybe could surprise a few.

Nicklas needs a run at 6 before he can be judged.

How long was Cooke playing with us before he looked a good player?

Seems a bit odd some are righting the kid off already.
