Don't remember him quoting this on behalf of the board? Do you think Kath shares this view? Do you think the Weatherills would offer an opinion?'"
There you go again. Anything a CEO says in public is on behalf of the board unless he specifically states otherwise. It's part of the job description. I realise that some people like to personalise this issue for some reason, but the policy towards our coach is defined by the BoD and not Rule.
Do you think that if the BoD has a different opinion we would be where we are now?
BTW, I can't recall the exact wording he used but if he was implying that the quality of players was more important than the quality of coach then it's debatable but hardly heretical. The best coach in the world won't do well with lousy players, while a good squad can have success under an average coach. Of course a bad coach can destroy a good squad so like most things it's all about getting the balance right.

very good post, also worth adding that in all types of pro sport teams that look awesome on paper can have stutters and false dawns but usually class shows through , again FWIW I think the signing of martin will be a real hinge pin to the rest of our season and drive upwards
just the man we needed at the right time too

Totally disagree with that! I would suggest a coach is the most important part of any team.
For example look at Crusaders last season, a team full of virtually unknowns, most average barring a couple (though it is worth noting none would get in Wigan/Wires side)...a good coach went in and made their season a success based on their previous seasons performances.

I like Rule generally, wasn't really considering whether he'd said it speaking just for himself or for the collective board. (Although I got the impression at the time that it was his opinion.) I don't really see that it makes much difference to the point I'm making: Surely Rule/the board/any right-thinking person can see after looking at Warrington, Wigan, Crusaders and now Leeds how crucial a good coach is to the same (genarally speaking) squads.
Taking your point about good squads and average coaches, I think Wigan over the last 2 years provides the best example to illustrate a counter-argument. Nobby, in this case the "average" coach, took a good squad to the semis in the playoffs. He'd dragged them from bottom four to that position in a year or so. It was generally agreed amongst the Wigan fans that Nobby had taken them as far as he could, and thank you very much.
McGuire, in this case the "excellent" coach picked up where Nobby left off and took almost the same squad to GF winners and clearly for all to see, the best team in the competition by a country mile. A different class, in short. The singular factor must be seen as the difference in the quality of the coaches?
I'm amazed the point is even up for discussion - I thought I was stating the bleeding obvious!

Someone had written in his wiki profile mentioning the fact that gleeson was going to, and these are not my words, "rip through the scumkr and waltz past craig hall like a revolving turnstile", well something like that anyway!
