What war was that Love - dont know what the Hell you are on about - And by the way I was defending my Home City in my thread but maybe I wont in the future. If you live in Hull you are one of the ones that I defend while in my work place in the East Riding- they wont even go to Asda in Kingswood because its full of Scrotes - Im with them in future if you are one of them

OLD FAITHFUL PAL OF MINE:

Quote: beetwaste "Plymouth? Bristol? Nottingham?

Bizarre. I'm disappointed. Elland Road is a filthy dump, and will need large money spending on it. Villa I understand. Liverpool's new ground isn't a dead cert yet. Forest/County both have elderly grounds. Milton Keynes deserves nothing because of the way they treat their fans at Wimbledon.

I'm pretty confident that the World Cup isn't heading to England in 2018, if that's the standard of our application.'"

I applaud the choices of Plymouth, Bristol and Nottingham. The games should be played over the widest area and biggest selection of grounds as possible, to give everyone the chance to go to a game without having to travel a great distance should they desire.

Tha FA and 2018 organising committee are aware of the FIFA stipulations regarding ground requirements and work to bring sub-standard grounds up to scratch is obviously planned.

Factors that FIFA take into account are number of grounds available and location of grounds across candidate nations. Therefore the more widespread the better. It would be easy to use all the big, established grounds already in place. Why not spread out a little?

Bravo I say. icon_idea.gif

Hulls problem is a deep seated one, the residents are very inward looking in outlook. No one travels to Hull unless they have too; you don't pass through the place to go some where else not even a visit to the seaside. There is a distinct lack of hotels and guest houses etc for any world cup bid to be successful we need more people are not going to travel too far for games. We are miles away from any other large conurbations and our railway connection is laughable, even the motorway stops short of the city. We are at the end of the line in every sense, isolated both culturally and in terms of infrastructure. The transport system within the city is close to breaking point, the roads are too busy and getting worse.

The new road planned for Castle Street will bring years of misery and achieve nothing but provide a panoramic view of the Humber for the cars stuck on it. The buses are at best old, tatty and are there to serve the companies that own them not the population they are supposed to serve. The Humber Bridge is going to cost all of us in Hull a lot of money every year shortly; it’s running out of money. Unless some one does something quickly we will be paying through every orifice never mind our noses. That bridge is going to be the death of this area and it will take all the city councils KC money just to bail it out for a few years.

Hull has the same problems as every other city in the UK; perhaps we fare better in having fewer guns and knife crimes so it’s not all bad. The stadium was not going to big enough and any city council would have had trouble finding the funds for its enlargement. The political will for such a project is not there, we are in the middle of one of the worst recessions, unemployment is soaring and you will have to increase local taxes to pay for all of this, get real. You use existing stadia with all you require on hand, you keep the costs down and then you can make money or at least break even. The Olympics has sucked money away from the regions into London at an alarming rate and not just for sports. The same will happen for the world cup, which I do not think fro one minute this country will get anyway, unless we oil a few more greasy palms.

As Kathy rightly pointed out we have a thriving cultural scene that the rural types around us avail themselves of and we can take pride in some aspects of Hull city life. Life in Hull is not as bad as some would have us believe and I for one get sick and fed up of people running it down. If you want to call the place then sod off and visit York or Leeds, the city will survive without you.

Your generalizations of people outside of Hull make your own complaints all sound a bit "pot kettle black" to me.
As a “bumpkin” myself and someone who travels around cities in the UK and worldwide I can honestly say it’s got a lot more character and things going for it than some. To me the world cup was not just about what the city has now but the legacy it would leave after. Just look what the Olympics did for places like Barcelona. A braver decision maybe would have been to bring the games to places to Hull as after all I understood the England bid was trying to sell the “peoples game”. And maybe the Hull bid should have (maybe did) not just sell the city but the area and coastline that surrounds it.

Good job the FA inspectors weren't in Hull today to witness first hand how quickly the city becomes gridlocked due to a single traffic incident, we'd have never got selected as one of the world cup venues - oh hang on!!!

It was an accident then? I thought loads of people had gone mad!

To be honest, the road layout in Hull is utterly abysmal.

Hardly fair comment as it is the same in all the big cities in the UK, try getting around the North Circular in London during ANY time of day after an accident and Hull traffic is a picnic! Even going through small towns(such as mine) to Motorway junctions is crazy even without accidents. The sad fact is the road network is pants everywhere due to lack of forethought & spending.
I think the Hull bus network is far superior compared to places like Milton Keynes & though their road network design is about as good as it gets it is not that great.

You beat me to it icon_smile.gif . I spend more time in other cities than I do in Hull nowadays but I'm always glad to come back at the weekend. I'm proud to be from Hull and always tell people that they should come and visit before passing comment - our city compares pretty well to others, as do the locals, and I really think the powers that be are doing a fine job in raising Hull's profile and trying to attract investment. I'm sure that, like many "boards of directors" they don't get everything right and have a swamp of beaurocracy to wade through but I think the past few years have seen a real change in direction for the old place.

It's a shame we couldn't have been chosen as part of the World Cup bid because it would have done wonders for us imo.
