Could have been the other way round.

And McGuire learnt off Meninga and Bellamy but doesnt mean Brett will make a superior SL coach to Andy Last, does it?

It doesn't always work like that. Cunningham worked as assistant coach to Nathan Brown and took over after Saints won SL. Look what happened there.

| A lot obviously want a quality Aussie appointment.
Can those bemoaning Brett Hodgson post who they realistically think we can appoint?
I think names like Flanagan etc are unrealistic due to the Salarys theyd command. I can't think of any proven Aussie coachs we can probably afford, so would probably have to tap into some references over there on any up and coming coachs we can afford

| Quote: Wilde 3 "We spoke to Watson that was it. We didn't offer him the job or put a contract to him. It was a conversation and at the end of it, we deemed that what he wanted (backroom staff) we were not happy to oblige. Thats as far as it went. The media, and Watson to be fair, blew it way out of proportion. Hodgson was nearly on our coaching staff a few years ago and impressed when here. Working under Maguire in the NRL will have only built his knowledge'"
Absolutely the Watson stuff never got anywhere much at all, he just used it to get his possible availability out there. He had loads to say about it we said nothing because it was nothing more than an exploratory chat as far as we were concerned. Hodgson on the other hand really impressed Adam Pearson alright and our owner was gutted when he reneged on a deal with us to return to his family in Australia. Thats either why he is about to be our new coach or at least why the media (clutching at straws as always) think he is. For me I'll wait to hear what the club have to say, but I don't expect we'll be waiting long, although how Adam is doing might come into that. However I said 6 weeks ago he was being courted by the Club and in the end it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Of course not, I just really think we need a new coach, this is the wrong time for him with the wrong set of players IMO.
I'm sure the club has done its research, Fonua will know him and I'm sure Ellis still has connections at Wests.

may bring Benji with him...
Shaul spoke highly of Hodgson, whilst under his tutelage,
IF he could bring McGuire's training schedules and preparation to the club..could be an astute appointment...
As with all assistant coaches, the main attribute to become Head Coach ,is to be able to man-manage..
This is the $64,000 question....

| Just hope an appointment is made soon so recruitment/retention is concluded. Don't want to miss out on potential targets.

That's a good point, for whatever reason Pearson doesn't think Last is the right man, he will have more insight than any if us.
.We have to be realistic, as you say we arent going to get a top class NRL coach, one of the problems for me is that Last has only been at Hull, he has never experienced another club, training methods etc, someone like Hogson has a range of experience working under some top coaches, he was a very attacking player also.
I do think its strange that people who happily have Fitzgibbon but are turning there nose up at Hodgson.

I see your point but the difference is Fitzgibbon is an assistant at Sydney to probably one of the best coaches in the NRL and he is that highly thought of Fitzgibbon is tipped to take over the Sydney head coach role or land head coach role at another NRL club... Brett Hodgson has just been demoted to the pathways/development coach.
Fitzgibbon would be the only NRL assistant I would be happy with and as for people on here crying we won’t get a top Aussie coach, we are Hull FC for f*ck sake! I thought we wanted to be a top 4 club!?
We need an experienced, top quality coach. At the moment we are Lewis Hamilton driving a Fiat 500.

We cant complete the NRL, what other team has signed a top NRL coach
Saints last two coaches both assistants
Same with Leeds (Furner), Warrington and Wigan.
SL rarely get top NRL coaches, they stay in the NRL.
Hodgson is working with McGuire, he's got a pretty good pedigree with success in SLand the NRL, including grand final wins in both competitions.
I'd say he demotion is probably more to do with him applying for other jobs than his ability.

| What I will say is this appointment could be one of the most important in the clubs history with the way are on and off the field. Really need to get back challenging in the next two years, we arent too far off with our squad if we could add a couple of additions.

The last part is something that has to taken into account as maybe BH had expressed an interest in the job here at Hull FC and been open with West’s. They may well have decided that they need to move forward with there plans so see BH as an unknown so have gone down a road with staff they know will 100% be there at the start of their pre season.
At the moment it’s all rumour who is or isn’t the new coach.

An important point in appointing an Aussie/Overseas coach is that they also can bring Aussie players to the club because of the past relationship they have had working together
