I reckon its something like this:

Mate I cannot say 'rat' in the house in front of the missus. If i do I'm reminded that their called longtails. Roland the longtail just doesn't cut the mustard with me. Glad I'm an East Hull lad and I'm off now to paint a rat green.

Come from a fishing family, my Grandad fished at sea and my Great Grandfather was a Skipper (both grew up and lived off Hessle Road), but personally I'm not supersticious at all.

I don't think a Green away kit would be disrespectful, as any one who lost their life was probably not on a 'Green' trawler, therefore disproving the supersticion theory.

Discussing the subject with my Dad tonight, he also recalled that 'Never set sail on a Monday' was also a local supersticion. Therefore, if we are aligning ourselves with all the local fishing customs we shouldn't play on Easter Monday or on a Monday night, when Sky schedule our matches for the live summer games.

Purely on the fact that I don't like the colour as a kit, I wouldn't choose a Green Away kit. We are Black or White, and ideally have the opposite colour to the current away shirt. If we have to have another colour, the blue variations tend to work ok. At the end of the day it is only an away kit and as long as the home shirt is Black & White (preferably Irregular Hoops) I'm not too fussed.

Green was an auspicious colour. Many a deckie-learner had his green jumper or scarf ripped off him and saw it flung into the sea by an older fisherman. Even today, there are few green cars on the streets of Hull, and the city council rarely uses this colour. The fear is that 'green will be followed by black' (widow's weeds).

Also green is difficult to see in the water if you went overboard.
