| Quote: Standee "Whiting is one of a few players (a fair few) over the years that have suffered from coaches that simply place a body in a space, not necessarily the right space.
He'd have made a great ball handling 2nd row if he could have put some weight off, he'd make a cracking loose forward if he was just a little quicker, he'd be a class centre if he was a fair bit quicker.
One thing I would never question is Whiting's professionalism or effort, sometimes effort cannot bridge the gap in ability.'"
I don't think it's ability I think he lacks the "gift" of speed - what a shame - if only his legs were as fast as his footballing brain.
Can sprint training make a recognisable difference to someone? Are there any stats out there that anyone knows of (without me having to go and look ).

But then I think Horne would also make a much better loose forward than he does a half back.'"
Bloody hell loose forward?!
I've long thought there was some truth in him not being a 6 but loose forward?!

He must easily make the team's most inceptions on our defensive line, shame about that one vital ingredient to take him to the line!'"
I'd be happy to see him there, and I feel sure he wouldn't let anyone down. Perhaps with a better attacking structure and a regular partnership with one winger, we could see him come into his own as a centre. He'll never make a 60 yard break (unless there's a sniper picking off opposition defenders), but with a good supply of early ball and a winger of, say, Briscoe's quality outside of him, there's no reason he shouldn't do quite well.
The only problem is going to be that improved attacking structure and good supply of early ball...

Isn't he supposed to have had sprint training? I reckon his boots are made of lead.

If someone is trained specifically and early enough you can probably add a little bit of speed, but it's an inherited trait (to do with the composition of fast and slow twitch muscle fibres iirc), Whiting could do sprint training all day every day, he may get a little faster, but he'd lose some bulk as well, so it would be counter-productive.

I once read an article by one of our GB Olympic athletics coaches saying that the idea that pace can't be coached is a myth and they were working with some union teams on improving the speed of their players... I did try to find it online again a while back but I couldn't.

Yes and no: he could improve a little in terms of speed, but he wouldn't lose any bulk by doing sprint training. I don't think I've ever seen a skinny sprinter.

Speed can be coached, but everyone has their own 'genetic potential'. Once this potential has been reached, there's no way a person will get any faster.

I was suggesting that even if he did solely sprint training, the benefit would be marginal.
We just face facts, he isn't a speed of foot player, as you say, defensively he's unquestionable, if you had someone with pace at fullback joining the line and Whiting could chose to put a pass left or right then we'd be on to something, but that relies on a quick PTB and forwards making breaks, which doesn't happen that often.

Before we move on too quickly... this sniper idea of yours.... you know, it just might work.
