| Quote: Mr. Zucchini Head "Why is it that every time we lose it's because we don't have half backs? Yesterday's loss was nothing to do with halves. Miller was much better than Keating and Burns only stood out because he puts himself about a bit.
The reasons we lost yesterday were that we switched off too often in defence, we made mistakes in our own half, we had a man sent off, and we didn't have the pace in the back line to make something of the chances we made. I actually thought we moved the ball pretty well and we did enough with the ball to win. I am far more concerned with our defence currently.'"
Spot on IMO.
Regardless of concerns about our halves - and there are legitimate concerns - they didn't cost us the game yesterday. Like you, I'm more concerned about our defensive frailties.

| Our defence has slipped massively. We started off poor, then hit a good spell and now are back to poor.
Granted been a man down yesterday didn't help, but I still wasn't feeling comfortable when we had a full team. Last season I had confidence when we were defending our line, this year there's just an expectation we're going to concede.

The halves may not be good enough but radfords handling of them both has been p155 poor, constantly chopping and changing them hasn't helped and has probably had a detrimental effect on the pair of them.
Radford hasn't got a clue he's way out of his depth I reckon a half decent coach could get a lot more out of rankin and miller.

| Beginning of the season and with the signings we made lots said we'd be poor and indeed we are. TBh theres probably 4-5 decent players in the team and then a load of middle of the road dross that's all being made to look poor by some bottom drawer coaching.
The whole coaching team needs to go and a complete clean sweep. If that happened then I think people might have a little more patience but atm having Radford is just a continuation of constant failure weve had to endure since Agar

| Staffs is spot on,the halfs are garbage, that attempted tackle, by Miller, that gave them 6 points was embarrassing for a professional rugby league player.

It was a tame effort to say the least, but when you allow your scrum half to be caught one on one against a second row a yard from the line then what do you expect will happen? How about Houghton being left on the floor at the previous tackle meaning they got a quick ptb and we couldn't get off our line?

It's hardly a revelation that miller isn't very good. Plenty of us called it last season and also when others were clamouring for him to be brought in when he was sat on the sidelines this year. rankin isn;t much better but I hope he's on a lot less cash.
pearson needs to do something significant and quickly or our 150th anniversary season may turn into a nighmare one instead of the celebration it should be

Same London are getting closer to their first victory and we are garbage.
We are in a relegation battle if they do.

| They got close yesterday but seemed to panic when a bit of composure was needed.I can see them targeting our game as a good chance to get off the mark.

“We will not accept a top eight finish as a barometer of supposed success at any point in the future whilst I am the owner of this club.
Thats why you got the Bullet Agar...Adam Pearson wants winners...not useless gits like you.

| Radford is out of the Len Casey book of coaching and is up there with Tony Gordon,Peter Walsh and Agar as worse coaches to coach us.He either has to go or bring someone in along him.Me personally,I'd sack him and get someone in for remainder of season, who I don't know but someone please.Radfords ideas may be ok and I kind of buy what he is trying to do but you can't keep mucking about with team like he does.Players need to look at themselves and need a massive clear out.....Colbon,Crookes,Rankin,Miller,Horne,Carvelll,Arundle,Pitts are on loan and look as though going.g

Not spot on at all in my opinion. Defensive frailties are a concern but the club's biggest issue is at half back. I sat and watched all games up to ours yesterday and the difference in the way individuals in that position played for other clubs was palpable.
I'll use Kevin Brown at Widnes as the example. There was a play in front of us near the Salford line where Brown was first receiver as Salford were going to do a big open shift to the other wing. Right at the last second he sprinted around behind the ptb and called the acting half to give him a short side ball. Having received it he threw a cut out face ball across his centre to the Widnes winger who virtually walked over the line unopposed. He'd seen the difference in numbers and initiated a fairly simple play that resulted in a very simple score. That is the kind of thing I'm talking about. Playing what was in front of him and having the authority to make things happen. He also kicked reasonably well. By the way someone like Brown wouldn't win you a grand final but I'll tell you what he's streets ahead of what we have at our club and is a big factor in their league position. As for other halves - well Chase is just Chase - brilliant at times and ridiculous at others but a bit of brilliance wouldn't have gone amiss yesterday as we already supply plenty of our own ridiculous.
In our own game we moved Rankin to full back through necessity and Azza came on and ripped up KR's left edge a few times singlehandedly. We know he's not a HB just a hooker but we looked far more dangerous with him running at the line taking players on. Having said that out of the two young Aussies Rankin offers a step and some pace and would certainly be the pick of them both. At least he fashioned an opening for Hadley while taking a bang himself with a ball at the line. Miller I'm afraid is nowhere near the level required. He's simply receiving the ball then passing it on to someone else without asking a single question. His kicking game, apart from maybe the high kicks to the corner, is diabolical. Yesterday was no different with several random kicks to their in goal which no one had a hope in hell of chasing down. Easy meat for the opposition. Horne used to get dry bummed on here for better kicking than Miller is producing. Strangely I don't see any praise for Radford on here today for sticking with Miller and Rankin which is what so many people have cried out for. Especially from the 'Miller will be dropped this week' brigade. It's a shame the tactic of sticking with them isn't working although admittedly there's no other choice really.
So I stick by my point entirely. To the poster that you replied to who asked 'Why is it always the halves' fault ?' that would be because we've been garbage at half back for a long time and we've been a garbage team for a long time as a result. Sure we've dropped off defensively in games and it needs fixing but maybe if we asked more questions, and were more of a threat with the ball, we wouldn't do as much defending and the opposition would have less energy to exploit us. Plus you have to factor in that the opposition generally has better halves than us and as a result we are defending better plays against us that we are throwing at them.
The half back situation isn't the only thing wrong - if it makes everyone feel better sack the coach as well - I really couldn't give a toss about Radford and whether he stays or not. But if you were doing a pareto analysis of Hull's problems addressing the poor half back performances would be the top action. Until this area of the team has been fixed we'll win nothing whoever is in charge. I'd bet my house on the fact that the exact side that played yesterday would never win at Wembley or Old Trafford whoever was coaching them because the players in key positions simply aren't good enough. We got to Wembley last year thanks to Holdsworth's performance in the semi final - although average in a lot of areas he had a very good kicking game which got us there.
It's the single biggest thing that has disappointed me about Pearson's tenure. He said he was going to get us some world class play makers yet yesterday we had Miller, Rankin and latterly Heremaia in those positions. That's a bigger fail than appointing Radford in my view.

I understand your general point and agree that our halves aren't anywhere near good enough. But talking specifically about yesterday they did not cost us the game. It was not the fault of the halves that we let in 18 points in the first 25 minutes of the game. In fact we actually created some opportunities to score first that were bombed by sub-standard play from supporting players.
It wasn't the fault of the halves that Crookes dropped a harmless kick to gift Rovers field position leading to a try. Nor that he then got sent off leaving us with 12 men for most of the second half. We then created sufficient opportunities to get back within 2 points before lousy defence, stupid errors, and being two players down (Crookes and Hadley) finished us off.
I actually thought Miller played a little better yesterday. More direct and passing closer to the line. Rankin was completely anonymous though.
