Any particular reason why you believe that?

At least this year we haven't waited until too late.
Acquiring Long now to deal with the "Thorman situation" is good business IMHO. Roll on October and the end of the season

You're right he will have made the best decision for him and his family. However, speaking from personal experience, that might mean turning down significantly more money.

| Quote: The Dentist Wilf "Shaun Long Background information
As it is a while till the next Diary I thought you might find this interesting it comes from various friends over the pennines and although you might not believe it I know it to be 100% true because i know the folks involved.
late last week the Wigan Chairman flew back to this country from a signing trip to Aus. empty handed. He had found as many clubs have, that aussie players are holding us all over here to ransom and using a possible move here as a tool to increase their own contracts back home. He had decided that he would go with his coaches views and grab Shaun Long from their local rivals. On Sunday when our club thought everything was sorted, it came to light that Shaun had been visited by Noble and their Chairman to sell him the 'Wigan Dream', they even sent a couple of Wigan players to see him at home on Sunday afternoon. however although their offer was a very good one, Long, declined and decided to come to Hull. This decision I am told by folks who know the Saints players was solely based on the way he had hit it off with Agar and the vision and ideas that our coach put to him. He is truely excited by the move.
Richard Agar I believe has been instrumental in both our last two signings , and has sold the club by having a vision and a interesting list of possible aquisitions that the club are chasing. I critisised him recently for his tactics but on this occassion he deserves some praise I think!'"
Can somebody confirm who the GB coach was when Long left the tour down under early?
Wasn't Nobby in charge then?
Is this another reason why he chose us................cos he can't stand him??

RT has every right to doubt what I say he is a hardened and good supporter of many years, however on this occassion what I say is right, and has been confirmed in part by the Mail any way! I just thought that folks on hear would like to know just what lenghts Wigan went to to get him and how he had the courage to stand by his original agreement, I am not saying that money did not come into it , but Wigans was described to me as a very generous offer! o all I am saying on this occassion at least, well done Agar!

| Thinking about it, even if you only get six months of quality service out of Long he'll have repaid the investment.

I did not hear the interview on Humberside Sean Long gave last night, did anyone else? I was told though he has been offered some kind of coaching role at FC? If true would be great IMO.
That's if the club don't sack him for speaking to Humberside! (unless Humberside nicked the interview from another local station?)

I think Long was interviewed by Radio Manchester.
He said he was very impressed with Richard Agar and that one of the reasons he was keen to sign for Hull over a few other offers was that he was being given the chance to help coach the young half backs at the club.

In which case, a good move. His experience will be invaluable.

You are now Troll enemy no.1 worldwide!
I am not unhappy with the signing of Long I am just pointing out that 90% of players that sign for any club always say they've been persuaded by the coaches vision, whoever that coach may be. All long term fans will recognize the pattern. it's like there's a manual full of generic responses to all certain situations in Rugby League. The chances of Long's signing mainly being down to Agar's vision are slim indeed. This applies to most signings in fairness.
I honestly don't mind if some teenager accuses me of being a troll, my opinions aren't validated to me by having any other posters approve them.

I agree with that. When any player in any sport says that I generally think 'Bull'. They may as well have a board that they read it all from......Wait, doesn't another club already do that?

| Addressing the point made much earlier in this thread that this is another Alan Hunte situation:
Unfortunately for Hull (and, I think, Hunte), he was offered staggeringly generous terms by the club. They were also staggeringly WRONG. During his entire career (right up to his last GAME in the playoff final) Alan Hunte was one thing: an outstanding finisher.
At Saints he was one of my favourite players. He was quick, athletic, big, strong, agile, hand great hands, but most of all he knew where the try line was. When Hunte signed for us it was to play on what was traditionally our weakest side of the field (although he could play either equally well). Saints were always at their best spinning the ball to the opposite side of the field and yet he still managed to weigh in with a significant number of tries. After his opening season he never stopped scoring. Long and short range, latching on to grubber kicks, leaping high to steal the bomb away from the defending winger (his speciality) and plenty of good supporting tries. Season after season he weighed in with a bagfull. Then Bomber got the idea to move him into the centres.
At first it seemed pretty logical (many Saints fans still think this way) and it certainly paid dividends in tries. But Hunte - Gawd bless 'im - didn't function at his best when his rugby involved an element of THOUGHT. He was an instinctual player. Thinking hampered his game. Missed tackles. Poor options to his winger. Passes dropped that he would have snaffled (and gone fifty to score) on the wing.
When Hull came knocking (I was furious at the club for keeping Goulding in favour of Hunte) he was offered terms that could only ruin his game. Full back AND captain?!?! Pure Thinking OVERLOAD for Huntey. I just couldn't believe that Hull were THAT daft. He should have been a great player for you guys.
Long is another instinctual player, but he's demonstrated time and time again that he can think to match-winning effect. Thankfully, his position is cast in stone (provided Agar doesn't suffer some kind of weird brain spasm and play him at hooker like Andy Goodway did for GB). I'm not so sure about him being made captain. But I don't think it will be a problem.
So, no - you cannot draw parallels between Hunte and Long.
