Crooks, Rose, Skerritt and Woods from the past. From more recent times Greenhill and Radford.

Always remember the tackle by Skerritt, the Rose punch on Rod Reddy in 82, Woods with the ball ignoring a huge hole so he could run straight into the breaking scrum headfirst and also Fred Ah Khoi battering Casey at craven park.

I think it was in the Floodlight Cup against HKR Phil Lowe
made a break he came up against Paul Woods and he just throw the ball into a empty
space rather then be tackled by Paul Woods

Quote: knockersbumpMKII "Excellent selections there.
Mick Harrison was probably the hardest/toughest going from reputation alone that I heard from old uns who watched the game during the 40s/50s/60s & 70s ( I only started going in '78 as a 9 yr old so don't really remember too much from my first couple of seasons)
I wouldn't say Paul Woods was an out an out hardman, he was just a violent head case.
Rose always had that air of a man not to be messed with, Skerret was just tough but to me never was the type to dish it out I thought.
Crusher Cleal I would have put down just on the fact he looked intimidating
A story I was told and have no reason to doubt (from a family member) about Mick Harrison.
Hull were away to Warrington (Old Wilderspool Ground), now for those who remember, the changing rooms were under the stand that the supporters used to sit and at the end of the game spit on us (if we were lucky) as we left, well at the back of that stand was the coach/car park.
Well on this particular day, as Mick got off the bus and was walking behind said stand he had to pass the Home changing rooms, these had small high up slotted windows (frosted mind) that opened outward and as Mick was passing under one of them he heard a voice inside say, what we have to do in this game lads, is take out Harrison, if someone can sort him out early, this game should be ours....what did Mick do....He walked staight into their changing room, dropped his kit bag and said, "why wait for the game, lets sort it out now" and proceded to beat £uck out of three of them before he was dragged out by some of his team mates who'd heard the comotion.
It goes without saying FC won the game that day and by all account Mick had a good game as well....lol
The thing is, from what i've heard, Warrington at the time had some very hard men of their own which only goes to show how tough Mick Harrison was.
AFAIK he died in a forklift accident on the docks.
Anyone got any other similar stories/memoirs????...pre 1978 that is as that's as far as i can go back.

The Floodlight Cup against Wovers was the one where woods just ran over Paul Rose. Rose, was unconscious on the floor and then as the minutes ticked by with the first aiders at his side, over the tannoy "is there a Doctor in the ground?"
Everyone just peed themselves as Paul Woods stood there as innocent as a Choir boy. Rose was eventually stretchured off.
Without doubt, Paul Woods was the hardest player I have ever seen.
Must be something in the Cumbrian water because the other one on my list is Eddie Syzmala from Barrow (think I've spelled his name wrong) but he was as hard as nails and his face looked like it had been through a mincing machine.

i believe i saw mick trailinjg round Primark with his wife a month or so ago
He went to school with my current wife and to look at him you wouldnt mess i believe Mick Scott died on a dock accident

A game i remember was of the artistic pugilism of Bill Drake A opposing winger was making inroads with alarming regularity .Bill had this " knack" of nutting on the run , being quick ,he was a threequater when he came to Hull .He homed in on the winger and never layed a hand on him just a glancing nut on the temple the winger was dragged out of the threepenny railings and carried of never moving "class act" Bill Both Jim and Bill were a fearsome pair

1st game he played at the Boulevard. Nailed the bloke and got a 3 game ban i think?? Never took a backwards step.

Greenhills scrap with Ward has to be one of the best on TV but the full version isn't on U Tube anymore

Lee Radford is the hardest player to ever wear the Black and White shirt. Paul Woods was hard but also mad, Lee is a tough nut and a disciplined player. I once heard that Andy Dannatt once grabbed hold of Vinnie Jones in a London nightclub many years ago when Vinnie was wendyballs tough guy.

Hepi was a grade a w.nker just like two Bob Roberts. Woods , Crooks , Rose , Stone , Regan , Harrison, Wilson & Street were probably the player that stand out .

Ahhhh those were the days eh Paul.

2 Storys that stand out for me are Greenhill laying out Barry George and his cronies in whittington and cat, left them eating "pine apple" chunks in the bogs and Radford flattening Crossman and the Ladyboy in white horse.
