Football related but still an interesting read on fan psychology
"Supporting a team shouldn't be about winning or losing, it should be about the whole experience: meeting your mates, having a beer, watching the game. That's what being a fan is. Isn't it?"

HULL KINGSTON ROVERS is my religion, Craven Park is my church and Jordan Abdull is my God: |
|
| It's becoming a common theme
I know plenty of fans from both clubs who have had enough with the game in general not just their own clubs.
This restructure can't come soon enough I reckon

The restructure will only exacerbate the problem, I reckon. Stupid bloody idea.

Well your Chairman doesn't think it will be the end all and be all of the game and I think anyone who sees the changes next season as the saviour of RL isn't thinking clearly at all.
The downward spiral will be hard to reverse because the officials, disciplinary fiasco's and the RL will still be the same and our best players that are our 'Box Office' will be moving to the NRL and TV coverage will still be beset with naff commentators and presenters. If you want proof then look at this season, crowds were going to be flooding back after the feel good factor of the World Cup and the premise that relegation would add lots of spice to the competition, yet last weekend just 67,000 watched 18 games (its a good job that London were away at Leeds otherwise it could have been under 55,000)
That's abysmal for Super League never mind the whole professional game! For me, although I won't be doing it just yet myself, I understand people walking away and once people leave the game they fill their time with other things and its twice as hard if not darn near impossible to get them back.

| My walking away is total disillusionment with the administrators of the game.
I presume Wilf's attendance records are right, then more supporters watch Man Utd at home then the whole of RL teams put together....THE GAME IS IN TOTAL CRISIS.
Radford's total mis-judgement and unfairness to put so much pressure on young Miller tonight will not help Hull's season and if it blows up tonight....bye, bye more floating supporters.

Your analogy of united getting more supporters is a laugh, They are in the same boat,
pro-rata with rugby teams they will be losing more supporters, especially this season.
I for one would rather watch Hull f.c. play than united, And i will...

| The crowd situation is a very real concern. Ok some will point to growing TV audience, but many more one sided games like we have seen two weeks running now with the Broncos and that will suffer. (I personally have not watched either game other than to see what the score was a times. Last night I watched Masterchef instead.)
You could though select many different sports and compare the crowds and we would look good. Look at County Cricket for instance. The crowds there are very poor. Do we compare to them? No we don't. I regularly attend games at Lords and believe me there is often barely a soul in the ground. What we don't have though is multi millionaire backers (sponsors and chairmen) supporting the game.
For that reason we have to look to strong chairmen and the RFL to bring in sponsors. Without them the game dies. It certainly won't be appealing if our only box office stars desert us for the NRL.
At the moment I see us split. We have the RFL and a group of chairmen on one hand who seem to think the status quo is working. On the other we have AP NH MK etc who see the game as being undersold and under valued and are battling against the old farts in Red Hall. While that battle progresses all that will happen is supporters will dessert the game.
As Wilf says once you are out of the habit of attending regularly its hard to return. Life moves on. My personal circumstances bare this out. HFC on Friday nights is completely out of the question for me. So much so I don't even consider it. Even Sky on Thursday is not a habit yet, though I am missing Saturday night rugby. I find myself drifting to other entertainment. Not because of any malice to the game but simply because it doesn't fit into my lifestyle anymore. Even last week when we had a Sunday game I had a prior long standing appointment which ruled out a trip to the KC (THANK GOODNESS). Priorities change and before you know it someone who attended 12- 20 games a season only attends 2 - 5. Christ I am even attending a Basketball match next week.
Its easy to simply question "the good Ol Faithful" and have some flippant remark questioning any loyalty people have, but people have other priorities in life and things like rugby can easily fall by the wayside for the slightest of reasons. And right at this moment in time the game is at a major crossroads which could result in many more "Voices of reason" being lost.
I fear it will only end up in disaster

No wishing to lead anyone a stray I just checked them again and they are for Round 6 as follows
Super League 59174
Championship 7081
Champ 1 1618
Total 67873
And that on a week when London were away and 3 of the 5 five figure Clubs Leeds, Warrington and Hull were at home. When just say Wigan and Saints and indeed London are at home that figure could well fall to around 58-55,000.
The RL World Cup legacy and the return of relegation was going to see crowds rocket this year but anyone who thinks that is ever going to be the case or that next years set up will solve the problem and see us with massively increased gates is I am afraid in my opinion deluded . The games on it arris I agree with Graham Richards and sympathise with the V of R because the whole thing needs new blood, new ideas and a commercial orientation starting at the very top.

It won't be the saviour but it's the chance to turn a corner
