Quote: Mild Rover "And they're never wrong!
I don't think we have a choice if we want to challenge consistently in the medium term. There's no option but to generate a pipeline of your own talent who are trained intensively and to the same system as the first team so players can slot in. Otherwise you're locked into continually bringing in average experienced journeymen on shorter deals whilst ignoring creating the nucleus of the side in 3-5 years time. I really hope the success of Lineham/Crooks etc, plus the 7 England academy lads is the first evidence of this change in emphasis and its results.

I agree about Biggs. Could be a very good signing, but hurry the feck up please.

Quote: F.C. Aces "Oh dear that's a bit overboard, at least give the kid a chance first. I've got absolutely nothing personal against Tom Biggs, I'm sure he is a nice enough person and he plays at a decent level but doesn't set the world on fire by any stretch. Hull FC is a sports club that needs to be aiming high and this signing is the signing of a club aiming to be top 8 and nothing more.

That's the problem he isn't a kid, and as talented as some might think he is he'll still be 30 at the start of the 2015 campaign and if we decide to keep him he'll be taking up a decent amount of the salary cap (2 youngsters wages easy)and still not probably have played a single SL game, why aren't we looking at spending the time & energy elsewhere? Why do we need another winger when we have 3.

He will play some games this season I'll bet he plays a few games this year.

3 wingers isnt enough especially when one is average and out for a few months, another is great but does seem to pick up injuries easily and the other hasn't played for 2 years and will either be awful or average.

Biggs is off the cap as he is classed as an 'international standard' RU player. Yes his age isn't ideal, but he's a Hull lad and an FC fan, and I think his size and power will add something different to our team and suit our style of play.

where does it say that? Don't the players from 'new player pool' have to be under 23 to qualify?

Nope - international players from other code(s) that haven't played RL b4 !

AP sdtated repeatedly he is OFF the cap completely.

He will play half the games this year & gradually improve - but will be solid from Day One. Line speed, wrestling & positional play will be a challenge but sure he will go well.

All part of the HULL psyche.

He's about 5'10/11" and 12st 11lb ish so he's more Damian Blanch/Aaron Murphy but lighter. He's lighter than Jason Crookes so certainly not a winger that has size or power in that sense. That's not necessarily a bad thing but he'll be defending against bigger taller men much of the time and generally the "fashion" has been for powerful wingers because of all the work needed in clearing the line.

Having watched him a few times there is 0 way he is in the 12 stone category! (Don't know where some of the heights and weights for players come from, i don't ever take them as certainty) eg Feka(never 6.1!!!!!!!!) He's pretty big and strong even in union terms.
He's a pretty built kid,and his strength and leg drive are great. Makes big metres after contact every time.

I've watched the grand prix all my life doesn't mean I can drive faster than Jensen button, the poster is making the point that rugby union is a totally different game tackle technique been one of the main differences along with play the balls, scrum positioning for a winger etc. etc. Biggs will need time to adjust but I still think he will make a very good rl player as long as he is given time.

How important is tackle technique in a winger? By time a winger usually tackles it means the main priority is to simply bring down the opposition down. If a forward in the middle, slowing the play of the ball etc more so. But it's in many areas still rugby with the same principles. His coach is an ex league man who'll I'd imagine would of applied many league defensive techniques in his coaching. Also biggs as said has watched league up close all his life. He'll know more than any the subtle differences he'll need to work on. If he didn't think he could id have thought he'd of stayed put and earned a good wage for an easier life! Can't imagine we'll be paying significantly more than what he'll be on now as a Saxon international.
