| Having not lived in Hull for over 4 years, but a frequent visitor I have seen massive improvements in Hull, certainly my area of work (education) seems to have improved hugely with a lot of investment. Newland and Princess avenue and now good places to eat and drink. Was really impressed with the things organsied in the last year such as Humber Street Sesh. I like St Stephens and the station, but the city centre itself is need of big improvements and hopefully this will be on he list for the city.
Should be back living in the area in a couple of years and cant wait to see the further improvements for the city.
Well done for all those involved in winning this bid.

This should complete the re-generation work around Humber Street & Marina. I'm excited already.'"
Just ignore him, he moans about the Mods not doing anything when someone starts a thread non Hull related and spends the rest of his time by going off topic, trying to mock Rovers (or Ben Cockayne).

Anyone who has visited Hull knows that it has plenty to do if you bother to look. You can easily lose a day or 2 in our museum quarter, The deep, Ferens etc.
I do sometimes wonder if the reason we always seem to do so badly is because of the city boundry being so small. I could be wrong but using Leeds as an example their more effluent areas are inside their boundry ours are not (Beverly, Cottingham, Anlaby, Hessle etc).
As an example Beverly won an award recently but how many not from this area would have made the connection to Hull? Not many I would imagine.
I will say one thing though, I can't see it going to our heads as folks in Hull don't act like that because as a general rule we are a pessimistic lot.'"

You are absolutely spot on. The boundaries of Leeds extend well into the countryside taking in many well off commuter villages wheras the affluent suburbs of Hull have always been (and wanted to be) in East Yorkshire.
This impacts particularly on educational attainment but also health, mortality, average house prices and other criteria used by the media and others to measure how desirable or not a place is to live in.
No doubt East Riding Council and businesses which are normally so keen to dis-associate themselves from Hull will be trying to jump on Hull's City of Culture bandwagon.

I did indeed.
I'm sat here chuckling to myself over that as I though it looked wrong at the time.

Indeed they will - I am off to the Pub to suss out opinion. Was asked recently by some-one there 'You don't really think Hull can get City of Culture do you' This from some-one who goes to City Hall, New Theatre and Husband goes to KC. I will be smirking

Well done Ull. I'm having to take all the jokes at work today. Living in Hertfordshire and working in London I meet many a person who likes to joke at Ull's expense yet don't seem to have ever visited. I find that odd. Especially in a city that boosts the pleasant delights of Hackney, Peckham and Lewisham. But I digress.
Ull deserves its place at the top table even for just the next 4 years. As I saw recently its not the end of the road but at the gateway to Europe and beyond. I just hope we have a decent govt by then that respects the working class city of Ull and supports this award as it should do. I note that the current Culture Secretary has failed to visit Derry this year, which is frankly shocking.
So well done Ull. The people who put the bid together have done a sterling job. Lets all get behind this be it from a far or from within the city limits. Lets shout loud and proud about our city and put it on the map.
I hope our sports clubs get behind it. I remember the "cog" badge of Hull about 10 years ago that Hull wore on their kit. Lets get the City of Culture logo on our kits and make sure that everyone knows about the hidden treasure that is Ull, place or culture, sport, friendly people and above all else the Patty.

| Amazing.
Can't say i'm not shocked.
Will hopefully give the city leaders the kick up the arris they need.
The only thing that annoyed me was the list of events that were planned if Hull won.
What if Hull had lost?
Would they have gone back to the normal shortsighted leadership we know.
I really hope this brings the investment, tourism and rewards that Hull deserves. It is a good city, but with a level of strategic leadership it can become a great city.
Will also be good for us and the 150 year celebrations in 2015 to ride of the back of it.

You mean in the same way that Hull, in the promotional video, claimed that it had the Wolds.
Excellent result for Hull AND the surrounding area, but especially for the City, which should now be able to go on and complete the regeneration project.
Well done to all involved.

Liverpool had sponsors on Widnes & Saints kits in the run up to their year. Would hope that Hull & Rovers can carry a logo on their shirts in support, can't see the Hull Tigers being keen for some reason though

The UK one followed on after Liverpool's success. They're separate things though

Liverpool's was EU funded and is a bigger award. The UK award was created on the back of its success and comes with no National funding. Its already been worthwhile though, the coverage on the news channels alone today is the most publicity the city has had in the modern era.
