30596_1286642206.jpg If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.

If a 10 stone player and a 20 stone player are running at the same time in the same direction at a speed of 5m/s and pass the ball at the same speed and angle, which ball would travel the furthest forward? They obviously have different momentums.'"
Do I get marks if I show my working out?

Now we're getting into the difficult stuff, and TBH a full discussion of conservation of momentum in open and closed systems is probably way too far OT for this board. Basically the answer is 'yes' but in practical terms the difference would be too small to be observable.

Haha, OK I can see it's getting way too complex for others to keep up (hence the sarcastic remarks) so I'll leave it at that. My understanding of it (obviously on a less complicated scale to yours) is that regardless of the sum total of the momentum of the body it would go at the same rate after release due to constant velocity and not because of the weight (so if fatty Murrell passed a ball and skinny Hall passed a ball and were both running at the same speed, the ball would travel forward at the same rate regardless of Murrell's obesity). If there's more to it than that, it's never been explained to me which is why I wanted to know. Happy to be proven wrong as long as I know why!

now you have added another issue to the first issue and that is has fatty murrell ever been been mentioned in a sentence where he was described to have velocity and momentum

Maybe it was during the warm up
And if Saints are allowed 14 players and Warrington allowed 7 tackles per set, why can't we have two balls?

| It does beg the question, of how the game managed to survive on both sides of the world for 100+ years without using words like relativity, physics, momentum, perpendicular etc.
Are we just confusing things for the sake of it?
The same goes for obstruction. I played for 25 years, only finishing 18 months ago, and I dont understand the obstruction rule anymore. Even when it goes to the video, I still dont get it. Take Scott Taylors try on Friday night. In all the time that I played that would have been crossing because he took the ball before he went behind his own man. All this talk about "bad choices" by defenders is rubbish.
If its crossing its crossing. The same as if goes forward, its forward!

Nobody's confusing anything. The forward pass Law is the same now as it always has been. The only thing that's changed is that idiot Stevo and his 'momentum rule'. And the fact that forward passes don't seem to be policed as well as they used to be, which means they get talked about more.

THE BOULEVARD IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE HOME OF HULL F.C.
F.C. forever-forever F.C.: |
|
| I'm with you Alfie.....Kosh and Welsy ought to work for the RFL as all they are doing is making a simple game complicated.......A forward pass is a forward pass no matter how you try and dress t up differently and an obstruction is an obstruction (run behind the player with ball in Hand) crossing as I've always known it as......what disturbs me about the game now is why the laws of the game although they haven't changed, when an incident arises instead of calling it as it is, more time is spent explaining a reason as to why the decision wasn't given!
Example....Warringtons try last Monday...Hodgeson passed the ball 2 yds before the 10 yard line and it was caught 2 yds after the line???????
As I said earlier, I'm with Alife, such a blatant bad decision would not of happened in our day as regular ally as it does in today's game...
Sometimes I despair at how this game I love, is slowly being ruined!!

Clearly a forward pass isnt a forward pass then because, as we explained, the ball can be caught in front of the passing player and still be legal

Remember that Leroy Cudjoe wonder pass against St Helens last year? The "out the back door" pass to Michael Lawrence? It went forward in relation to the pitch. Is that a forward pass then? Because he couldn't have passed it any further backwards.
Quote: Ian.FCF " and an obstruction is an obstruction (run behind the player with ball in Hand) crossing as I've always known it as......what disturbs me about the game now is why the laws of the game although they haven't changed, when an incident arises instead of calling it as it is, more time is spent explaining a reason as to why the decision wasn't given!'"
Running behind a player with ball in hand isn't obstruction on it's own. Running behind a player with ball in hand is only obstruction if a defender has made an attempt to get to the player with ball in hand. Otherwise who is being obstructed? It's not difficult. Someone HAS to make an effort to get to the player. Not try and tackle a dummy runner. Not stand still. They HAVE to be obstructed from trying to defend.
Quote: Ian.FCF "Example....Warringtons try last Monday...Hodgeson passed the ball 2 yds before the 10 yard line and it was caught 2 yds after the line???????'"
But how fast was he running? And how fast was the wind blowing?
Sometimes I despair at how this game I love, is slowly being ruined!!'"
Absolute rubbish. The only reason it appears that way is because there is so much more (and better) coverage now that the game will be under more scrutiny than ever before. There will have always been bad decisions, just not as obvious and not put under the spotlight or microscope like today. This is a typical "back in my day" comment.
