| What a pretty ridiculous topic some of the best players in the game smoke,
Just because a player smokes dosn't hamper a players ability, think you also find that usually a player who smokes more often than not is one of the hardest trainers.
Smoking is a personal choice and considering the player in question this makes this thread even more of a joke...

The medical profession begs to differ. Smoking reduces athletic ability. That's a simple fact.

The Rugby Football League are in the process of reviewing the video that you are referring to. We do not condone behaviour of this nature and have contacted the player’s employer, Hull F.C., who have confirmed that they are dealing with the incident under their club rules.

Incorrect. In fact, the opposite.
Quote: jacko1 " think you also find that usually a player who smokes more often than not is one of the hardest trainers.'"
Is that right? I would love to see the evidence.

| Plenty of smokers at the Olympics (One athlete estimated 70 out of 100 smoked at the Beijing Olympics) and these are supposed to be the best athletes each country has to offer. At the end of the day the effect smoking is having on Meley depends on a few factors, mainly how long he has been smoking and how many he smokes a day.

70 out of 100 Olympic athletes smoke? Find that extremely hard to believe.
The more a person smokes, the worse their performance can be. I don't know about O'Meley specifically.

When I was working on the Commonwealth Games a huge portion of the athelete's smoked (and drank, and sh@d about!), the one that didn't were usually those involved in events requiring endurance.

I'd love to see the data for this claim as I find it frankly unbelievable. For a start it would mean that smokers are hugely over represented among Olympic level athletes compared to the general population.

Daley Thompson...smoker and always has been
Carl lewis was a smoker each bosy is different
AND lets call a spade a spade what the ferkk has it got to do with us wether they smoke or not as long as they work their bags of on match day!!
AND I am sure banning players from smoking/ drinking is going to infringe some human rights act somewhere no doubt so thats bollox i am sure.
each to their own
However in a e mail today The North Korean RL assure me no one smokes, drinks, has curry or dare not even fart without permission in their league because their contract is ended instantly if found doing so terminally

| The thing I've never understood, and it applies more to football then Rugby League which is a bit more easy going about such things, is this...
Since Arsene Wenger came to this country every sports team in the land has taken on board all this sports science stuff that they never paid any attention to before. You now have a ridiculous situation where Barnsley will book out a suite and a load of rooms at Forest Pines ahead of a midweek Tuesday night game at Shorpe some 30 miles away because somebody somewhere has told them that their chances of winning increase by .1% if their players have a kip between 3pm and 5pm and a bowl of chicken and pasta at 5.30pm rather than just rolling up at Glanford Park on the bus at 6pm like they always used to. Talking to somebody who plays at QPR a couple of months ago said that for their 12noon kick off with Man Utd back in December they all had to eat a plate of chicken and pasta at 8am and it did their heads in. Each player's meal is structured throughout the week by the club nutritionist with what they should eat on what day and between what times all tailored to the kick off time at the weekend.
Clubs are spending thousands upon thousands of pounds on nutritionists, dieticians, monitoring equipment, hotel accommodation etc etc etc to try and give them a slight edge over opponents who are all pretty much doing the same thing.
And yet loads of players, footballers and rugby league, smoke. Now surely 10 fags a day or whatever is going to do more damage than a bowl of pasta at 8am is going to do good?
I just don't understand why, when they're so OCD about everything else, clubs don't have it written in the contracts that smoking is forbidden.
Anyway, not nearly enough naming and shaming going on on this thread. We all know about O'Meley and Tommy Lee used to chuff away when he was with us. Who else of the current crop engages in this mug's game?

Ah, right. So basically it's an off-the-cuff comment by one weighlifter. And the entire article only refers to weightlifters, not athletes in general.
Solid data there.
