| Well the story I'd read from years back was that the term 'Soca' comes directly from the word 'Association', it was used by foreigners who could not pronounce 'football' correctly
Soccer was used in England until the 60s very frequently, it's even referred to as soccer in children's ladybird books at the time even though the front is the ladybird book of football.
I too insist on calling it socca just to get up the wendyball fans' noses

I left England in 1966 and it was soccer, then to South Africa where it was still soccer and then to Aus where to a vast majority it remains as soccer today. Attempts to rename the game football have not succeeded and no attempt has been made to change the name of the Aus National team from being called the "Socceroos". The name "Footballroos" just does not appear to have the same appeal to the Aus general public.
I also call the game soccer to avoid confusion with other football sports here.

| Quote: WormInHand "Nonsense. Soccer is the original and correct English term.
Many sports using the word football pre-dated soccer, particularly 'rugby football' in England. When the rules for Association Football were drawn up in the 1860s (by Hull's very own rlEbenezer Cobb Morleyrl (not sure where Princess Street was?)as alluded to by Mild Rover the other week) the game was called soccer to differentiate it from other forms of football.
Soccer is the original grand name for the game, while it only became known as football once the masses cottoned on. rlThere's a rather interesting history hererl.
Plus, I insist on calling it soccer because it pees the soccer fans off.'"

It says nothing of the sort. It's pure speculation on the journalist’s part.

How's he going to do that if he refuses to speak to the stadium owners? Hopefully his mega dummy spit is going to come back and bite him on his donkey.

| Football, Soccer, Association Football, whatever your personal name for it ........ there are records of if being referred to as soccer before football, by 15/20 years.
Personally i've called it Footy, Soccer and Football at one time or another and they are pretty much equally valid in my eyes.
I'd still rather be a fat lad watching some egg chasers by about a million times over

| Evening gents, just passing by and though I'd stick my oar in(again).
Soccer is indeed a historic term used to differentiate between rugby football and association football, just as it's used to separate between American football or Ausie rules in other countries now.
It was largely abandoned here, as the two sports were commonly referred to as either rugby or football and soccer became more a term of derision.
As for attendances, the Cardiff game was a sell out, for reasons that escape me, the Safety Advisory Group decided that almost 1,600 seats needed to be left empty. When we were last in the Premier League, pretty much every game was a sell out, just the segregation seats and a shortage of away fans reduced attendances. Though for some reason, for one game against Liverpool, it was decided that just a few hundred seats needed to be used for segregation, so that game ended up setting a record attendance of 25,000.
For next season, 2,500 seats have to be offered to away fans, 2,500 have to be sold as match day tickets and 20,000 can be sold as season tickets(all of those numbers are reduced by about 5% due to segregation). 14,500 season tickets have been sold already and now we've been promoted, I expect we'll sell the rest.
Just thought I'd clarify.
Congratulations on the win.

City "sold" 20,000 tickets for their party this week, well including passholders (12k) it was 20k (so about 8k tickets given away)
6000 turned up for your party, hardly any season tickets turned up

City didn't sell anything for their party this week, it was free.
It was announced the day before and we'd already been there on Saturday when we were promoted, it was never going to be full. But I quite enjoyed it.
