On a serious note I think playing against experienced semi professionals, who are still physically stronger and more developed is a great way to learn.
Instead of getting battered by full time professionals, who in turn would have battered the semi professionals, you say we should have played.
No learning, only demoralising and dangerous imo.
The lads showed great character today and would have benefitted from the increased intensity.'"
I meant the likes of Balmforth, Staveley, Barron, Severs, Martin not the academy debuts
We have to see if they're ready and more experience against Super league opposition does that
None of them will probably play against wigan

"Also experienced semi pro"
Bradford only played 4 or 5 first teamers themselves

Because we won't use them all at once?

This is what happened when Saints chucked a load of young kids in against Cas a few seasons ago. It didn't end well and they still had a fair share of older guys in the team.
I'd rather us drip feed them in when ready.
Of the recent crop im hoping Balmforth will take his chances this season. Staveley and Martin could give the first choice lads some headaches too

Obvious isn’t it?
But not for some it would seem

| You've got some good prospects coming through. They struggled a bit down the middle in the first half when we had five first teamers in the pack but even then one or two gave as good as they got.
There's definitely a case for giving some of the better Academy players a loan spell in the championship or some regular reserves games against grown men. Playing Academy games doesn't really test the better players enough to be ready for SL standard.

Really don't think Martin is far away from regular first team action, has all the attributes needed to be a solid winger.

Good to have some views from an opposition perspective. And yes agree on loaning rather than playing in the academy, theres also the social aspect of playing alongside older lads juggling jobs and RL rather than a dressing room teenagers sat on Tiktok

I can see Balmforth getting a fair bit of game time this year. Nu Brown will probably chop and change a bit between the halves and hooker depending on injuries. So when he is playing in the halves I think Balmforth will be lined up to be the bench hooker spelling Houghton.
Tindall and McIntosh will start the season as the wingers but they both have a bit to prove. McIntosh improved a lot in the second half of last season but even with him I don't think it's a case of if he's fit he plays. Martin could definitely force his way in if he keeps performing well.

| Tindall always gave 100% for us last season but not sure he's SL quality.

I think the 9 spot will be fought out between Houghton, Balmforth and Smith, with Brown likely in the halves most of the season alongside Hoy and then Trueman when fit. Seems to remember hearing or reading something where Smith said Brown had been signed to play in the halves.

Hopefully things go to plan and this could be our pivots at some point.
1 Walker
6 Hoy
7 Trueman
9 Houghton
13 Brown
14 Balmforth

| Quote: Chris71 "It was always going to be more about the performance than the result to gauge in a game situation how they'd cope not just in skill/talent but both physically and mentally against a strong opponent.
I think it's shown that the investment in youth and the work done by Riding & Shenton and now Cummins in nurturing the talent is and has been worth it.
These players aren't going to be thrown in to SL level week in week out, but should the need arise due to possible injuries/suspensions then they'll be more prepared for it and it would hopefully only be one or two at a time.
We do need an much more competitive reserve league in the game though to help develop the talent and help bring the promising young players through from the youth to the senior game consistently and in bigger numbers.'"
RFL missed a trick by not offering available League 1 places to several S/L clubs who want to have a meaningful weekly reserve fixture.
As more teams go out of business the addition of S/L clubs reserve sides in League 1 would have created that step up for younger players without having to go out on loan or duel reg and a pathway back for injured players without having to throw them in at the deep end when lacking match fitness
