they are great players, but not everyone watches NRL and shirt sales have as much to do about hype/reputation than they do current ability/form.

I'm sure Manly can afford to invest in youth and retain their key players, and if i recall correct, Lyon was referred to as a key player when he was offered and signed his contract extension early last year.
