Scott Taylor signed for next year more a less nailed on, not going to be cheap though (Transfer or Salary).

Carvell, Watts and Thompson all expected to depart.

Surprised at Thompson going he's impressed me and I reckon he can/will improve. Not surprised by the other two, Carvell has turned out to be a bit of a let down and Watts just needs to move on.

The Thompson one will annoy me if true, although I don't think his will be performance related and is more of a salary cap issue.

Surprised Wigan gave permission for you to speak to Taylor...assuming you haven't approached a contracted player?

Carvell was enticed out of a 2 year deal at Bradford, would he do that without the option / promise of a 2nd season?

Clubs are supposed to give out of contract players notice of their intentions on 1st May in the year the contract ends.
So Wigan should have told Taylor 4 weeks ago that they were going to invoke the 3rd year.

I guess they may have said to Taylor that they might not take the final year and just see what happens.

With the contract in Wigan's favour, it's a subtle way of enticing a transfer fee.

Maybe the second year was based on him playing a certain amount of games this year
