Beating KR is everything

Most fans attach far too much importance too it, it should be just another game with two points at stake instead it splits households. I have known FC fans who will not eat bacon on the day of the derby and neither side will certainly never give the otherside any quarter before during or after the match. Its not a game its far more important then that, losing gives you months of heartache as the other side take the rise out of you. Winning means you can take the rise out of them, well until the next derby. Derbies for me, have lost there bite in recent years due to stadium changes and the rise of a lot more bad feelings. The new stadiums do not lend themselves to mass singing of the faithful and Craven park is so designed as to split the few FC fans (who can get a ticket or even want to go ) to each end and drive down being in the open tends to diminish the sound .

The diminishing ranks of Hull born players also has an effect , mercenaries never perform with the passion a hull lad will have against the old enemymeans a lot less biff these days. A derby punch up always got the crowd going and the game usually got better with a couple of early baths to dampen things down a bit.

I have seen FC win matches againts KR and I have seen them lose, I was always glad to be there even Wembley 1980. One thing is for sure you can rip up the form book on a derby day because on form teams usually get topped and tailed derby day.

............. or its nothing

Derbies can be dire, drawn out affairs like two heavywieghts slugging it out with defences being all important, rarely are they classics.

My mate refuses to eat bacon. Not because of the colour. He's Jewish.

Quote: BP1 "It's not the be all and end all, but it's certainly a big game. Those who shrug their shoulders and try to be blaise about it are either fooling themselves or else they're fibbing. And all that "it's just another 2 pts" doesn't wash either (even though in cold hard cash terms that's what it is).

The difference between a derby and the rest of the season is banter & bragging rights. Beating a team who are sat 1st/2nd in the table always feels special and will get a crowd pumped up. But most of us hardly know any Wigan or Saints fans to crow about it in the days that follow. I'm pretty sure most people on here (at least the ones still living in Hull) know or work with plenty from the darkside. It's that banter & mickey taking (sometimes lighthearted, sometimes not so) before and after the Derby games that make them feel different.

Last season rovers were a mid table side, yet the atmosphere inside the KC, particularly in the July game was only bettered or matched by the Saints & Leeds games. Whatever anyone may say, another mid table team turning up at the KC doesn't generate anywhere near the same level of passion and fire as when our dear little neighbours come to play. Even back in the days when rovers were a NL side and we used to meet in pre-season it always brought out a healthy crowd to witness a one sided shellacking. I doubt it would happen if we played Dewsbury or Batley.

Personally, I always love to beat them. It certainly makes the following week at work a good deal more enjoyable. I think it goes back to my school days when my two best mates and I were virtually the only B&W in an east hull r&w school. I would agree with everyone else though, given a choice between winning two derbies or winning a trophy, the tin pot comes out on top each time.

They're special games, nerve-wracking but special. If we didn't have them this board would probably be only half its size.'"

When I started going to rugby in the early 1980's, as Hull and rovers were top dogs at the time, the derby was everything back then. That being said, maybe its because if the naivity of youth, but it didn't seem quite as hostile back then?

Now, because it appears to be some rovers fans' be all and end all, it is far more important to them than it is to us.

Its good to win any game, and it will always be good to beat rovers if anything so the unwashed element from the east button it for a week or two.

Beating "them" gives me a natural high that lasts for days. For me it's an important part of the cross city rivalry, it is not the be all and end all of the season though. My head always says cup win and league position -

My heart on the other hand says, let's stuff the B*star*s icon_lol.gif

Contrary to what others on here believe we should feel about the derby games i just don't get up for them like i used to. In the 80s when both teams were successful the derby games certainly did mean something, usually because there was usually something riding on it. Passions ran very high on derby days/weeks then and bordered on hatred at times (think good friday at the boulevard).
Nowadays I really don't get excited about them anymore than i do about other games. Whether it is because i live in rovers territory or because I don't get the day to day environment a lot of people do working in shops/factories/offices etc.
Maybe it is the SL era that has dampened down the intensity of derby games, we had it our own way for such a long time and looked down on Rovers as our poorer and inferior neighbours. That may be one of the reasons the Rovers supporters seem to be fired up for them more than we tend to get as well.

I also don't like the fact the banter has gone from good humoured stuff to hate filled stuff for a lot of supporters.

So for those who say those saying it is just another 2 points are lying. It really is the case for some of us.

Any Hull FC fan that says its "just another 2 points" is lying, to themselves mostly. Of course it is a big deal beating Rovers, the bragging rights are part of the culture of our city. There is nothing wrong with that, providing its something that is enjoyed, rather than life and death.

That said, as much as I enjoy beating Rovers and don't enjoy losing to them, if offered the Championship or Challenge Cup over losing to them every game in a season, I'd take either without hesitation.

I am not lying to anyone, results against L**ds mean a hell of a lot more to me than against KR.

And results in the cup and grand final mean a hell of a lot more to me as well... a derby victory certainly isn't "just another 2 points" though.

FWIW, I didn't see your post above mine prior to posting, otherwise might have worded it differently - no offence intended.

I wasn't offended at all, this place is all about opinions, even when I lived and worked in Hull the Rovers results meant little to me, possibly because I am from a generation where KR where largely irrelevant as they weren't in the same league as us, them crawling into SL happened long after I'd moved away, probably explains why my loating is reserved for all things Whinos.

(or that could be because Senior plays for them?)
