I wouldn't disagree, however as Standee has eluded to, not that easy in sport.

Do you think St's and Leeds are not on win bonuses?'"
Please educate us Mr Motivator!!!!
Why do professionals need to be driven by money all the time, when you listen to all the great sports stars in the world prestige is one thing that always come through.

Agree not that easy in sport, however there are different ways of motivating people other than financially. I do agree that in sport people should get win bonuses etc but this should not be for motivational purposes, its more for recruitment purposes to be competetive imo.

Usually the one's who have enough money in the bank to afford such high ideals. Dave, I am aware of plenty of the theories of management and motiviation and agree that money should not be a sole incentive to succeed, I am also, however, acutely aware of the wider business world where bonus is king.

| Quote Big Dave T="Big Dave T" Lots of sports teams do indeed offer financial incentives but before saying people dont have a clue i think you need to read some motivational theory such as Herzberg or Maslow around a hierarchy of needs. Herzberg actually makes a pretty good arguement that money doesnt motivate people but a lack of money can de-motivate.
My own personal view is that extra incentives should never be used as motivation, basic salary and pride in a job should be enough to motivate someone, if not get rid of them.'"
Never would I have thunk to see Maslow and Hertzberg referenced on an RL forum.

Ok, so youre aware that bonuses are generally not contractual elements of a contract that could often be changed or removed without notice and that actually a hell of a lot of organisations in the 'business world' dont actually offer bonuses and more and more are moving away from them and replacing them with things such as flexible benefits where you can buy more days holidays or cheaper child care etc. Not of these benefits are performance related.

I am well aware that money is the new god and people become fixated with the grotesque amounts that has found its way into sport. As all young sports people start off in life all they dream about is lifting trophies and been the best in their own field. Its the greed of everyone else around sport that has upped the anti, sponsers, players agents and the media.

| don't the SL rules state a win bonus can only be a few hundred £ anyway? I'm sure they used to?...which isn't a lot relative to what the top earners in SL make anyway

| If being a well paid pro RL player is not enough then I would rather they went elsewhere. As far as I know we do have bonuses for winning the CC or GF so there is some incentive there.

| Win bonuses of any significant amount would be difficult to manage under the SC structure. In order to ensure no breach, you would have to structure your wages and bonuses on the assumption that you would win all games and both finals. Falling significantly short of that would leave you with a substantial amount of cap unspent that could have been used productively.
As far as the more general point is concerned, I've worked on commission and flat salary, the latter with and without a bonus. I can honestly say that I've done my job to the best of my ability regardless. I know other people who have worked harder if it meant a bonus or more commission. Different people are motivated by different things.
In this regard, I imagine that sportsmen and women will show a similar variation. Some will be motivated purely by financial rewards, others by a mixture that will include prestige, pride, and a simple desire to be the best they can be. Although given the nature of sport I would expect the distribution to be skewed somewhat towards the non-monetary motivations.

| I work harder to get more salary.
It's an incentive yeah, but it's not a performance based incentive really, I work hard, my salary goes up.
It's the same with Rugby Players... Richard Horne plays better, he gets a contract renewal on more money.
