| Quote: Monko "....however Hull just seem to get bogged down with injuries week after week. It begs the question, Are our players trained and conditioned well enough, Do they have good diets, Are they trained to hard. I wish I knew the answer. I do feel that its more than just bad luck we suffer at Hull. The last 2 or 3 season have been injury mine fields.'"
It is a question asked a lot but, if you look at how some of these were picked up, I find it difficult to point at which ones might be related to conditioning/lifestyle/diet etc. Dowes had additional conditioning pre-season which included improving posture and tackle/collision technique and diet. I have tried to put together a list of the injuries this season (including some that carried over from last year) and even I was surprised by how many there have been – and I can’t recall any being less than two games although I don’t know how long each was actually out. My opinion is that there has been a lot of bad luck and that this is not down to bad conditioning, lifestyle etc. I have named 18 injured players (some injured more than once) but who have I missed??? Probably someone blindingly obvious like Thorman hemhem. Thankfully Crocker wasn’t a crock.
Berrigan (knee – don’t know the origin of this injury)
Tom Briscoe (injured making tackle)
Mike Burnett (can’t remember what his injury was)
Byrne (knee – did not see the incident)
Calderwood (pectoral muscle - could be poor conditioning but I didn't see the incident)
Cusack's (broken wrist)
Ewan Dowes (torn calf muscle)
G Horne's (broken thumb)
Richard Horne (foot – can’t remember the origin)
Richard Horne (damage to eye)
King (shoulder injury)
King (damaged eye)
Lauaki (accident at home)
Manu (ankle ligament - you can tell him he's out of condition, I'd rather not)
Raynor (toe reconstruction after surgery)
Jamie Thackray (hamstring)
Motu Tony (knee injury)
Motu Tony (infection from insect bite / operation related?)
Danny Tickle (broken bone)
Danny Washbrook (missed early part of season – can’t remember why now)
Danny Washbrook (ligament - hit by stray leg in the tackle)
Whiting (broken leg – continuing from last year)

It almost beggers belief the amount of injuries Hull have had to endure over the past 3 or 4 seasons. Is it all bad luck??

Well weve changed conditioners and that hasnt made a difference. Weve changed gyms and training grounds etc and that hasnt made a difference. Weve changed coaches and assistant coaches and that hasnt made a difference.
The only thing we havent changed is the slow boring rugby, can we blame that?
Otherwise i guess the team coach must have ran over a black cat or driven under a ladder or something several years ago!

The more I look at the injury list I tend to think its not all down to bad luck, some of the injuries are of course, but for two or three seasons running suggest otherwise. Like I said in my earlier post, I wish I knew the answer.

| Could a valid reason be say a players state of mind? I wonder if moral is low in a team due to various reasons could this have an effect on a players ability to avoid injury or recover quicker from an injury.

I'd love to see the stats for defending in this and previous few years, surely if you have to spend more time without the ball defending, then you are going to get hammered more physically and you're going to weaken stuff throughout the body, so yes some of our injuries come from attacking moves, but is it not the fallout from defending multiple sets, over and over again.
In short, if they played more creative rugby they'd give their body a break in between sets and wouldn't have to put it on the line as much.
IE
A kick out at the end of a set of 5 down the field into the corner, gives less field position to the opposition so they have to think how to come back down the field instead of starting half way down it thinking "I just need to hit him as hard as possible", they have to subconsciously think "I need to keep some energy for the back end of the set of 5 as we need to make up ground".
If thought was put into field position and number of completed sets improved, I reckon injuries would drop nothing short of massively.
IMHO

Could be true although we might be caught in a circle - wanting to play different rugby but still carrying the burden of the injured playing staff not yet at full fitness.
