| They've already singed a contract that should be ample, why provide an extra incentive.

You really dont have a clue, like quite a few on here when it comes to motivation of professionals.
Do you think St's and Leeds are not on win bonuses?

Lots of sports teams do indeed offer financial incentives but before saying people dont have a clue i think you need to read some motivational theory such as Herzberg or Maslow around a hierarchy of needs. Herzberg actually makes a pretty good arguement that money doesnt motivate people but a lack of money can de-motivate.
My own personal view is that extra incentives should never be used as motivation, basic salary and pride in a job should be enough to motivate someone, if not get rid of them.

Not sure how you would guarentee that!!
FWIW if people arent performing for their basic salary they need getting rid of and replacing with someone that will.

I wouldn't disagree, however as Standee has eluded to, not that easy in sport.

Please educate us Mr Motivator!!!!
Why do professionals need to be driven by money all the time, when you listen to all the great sports stars in the world prestige is one thing that always come through.

Agree not that easy in sport, however there are different ways of motivating people other than financially. I do agree that in sport people should get win bonuses etc but this should not be for motivational purposes, its more for recruitment purposes to be competetive imo.

Usually the one's who have enough money in the bank to afford such high ideals. Dave, I am aware of plenty of the theories of management and motiviation and agree that money should not be a sole incentive to succeed, I am also, however, acutely aware of the wider business world where bonus is king.

Never would I have thunk to see Maslow and Hertzberg referenced on an RL forum.

Ok, so youre aware that bonuses are generally not contractual elements of a contract that could often be changed or removed without notice and that actually a hell of a lot of organisations in the 'business world' dont actually offer bonuses and more and more are moving away from them and replacing them with things such as flexible benefits where you can buy more days holidays or cheaper child care etc. Not of these benefits are performance related.
