Personally and just my opinion, McDonnell should be picked. Shaul will understand I'm sure, hopefully be spurned on for further SL action and McDonnell knows he can't rest on his laurels. It's how sport works.

And Heremaia is a hooker but he'll play at 7 , why not give Shaul another go and experiment with McDonnel at 6 , Horne at 7 and Heremaia at 9 with Houghton on the bench? We're not going to win anything this year anyway so why not try these youngsters out and give Houghton a chance to get his breath and perhaps improve on what's been a poor although hard working season for him to date? You can always change it around if it doesn't work but not if Shaul isn't in the 17.

Has McDonnell ever played in the halves? More importantly, have we ever trained with him in the halves?

Don't know but I'd give it a go just to get some pace into the middle. I think Heremaia is a better hooker than Houghton especially in a team devoid of playmakers and ideas so moving him there makes sense. I'd rather watch us fail at least trying something than seeing the same old same old. If McDonnel comes backand stays fit for the next two years what will have happened to Shaul? He'll either be gone or have become accustomed to a lower level of game. Are we keeping Shaul for cover? How does he get the first team experience to eclipse ( or not ) the current incumbent? At York? Or if he's any good more likely at Leeds!

Here's a question for you Chris: If we moved McDonnell to the halves to accommodate Shaul into the team, what would you do when Holdsworth returns? Keep Holdsworth (our main playmaker) out of the team, drop Horne (our best player this season IMO) or drop McDonnell (who had been playing well until his injury)?

ATEOTD Shaul has only played one game for us (albeit a very good one) so we don't know what the future holds for him. I'm sure he will have opportunities further down the line if he doesn't feature today. If he impresses in training then that will certainly keep McDonnell on his toes and give PG something to think about. I just want to see the best player playing in their positions and right now my head says that's McDonnell. If he's not 100% then Shaul should get another chance.
