| Quote: Standee "but where are you comparing it to, that was the point I was making, for the same money you could go to Pipe andd Glass in Dalton and eat 10 times better, or the Wellington Arms in Lund for a lot less.
The HDM Good Food Guide isn't a measure of success imho.'"
Comparing Pipe and Glass against the Boars Nest is a little daft. Ive eaten at P&G and it was very good - although in my experience the service was better in BN, but the point is you can buy two courses for less than 20 quid in BN, you struggle tp find a starter less than 15 in PG on the lunch time menu.
Also, I think by some of the comments on here that I may have just had a one off good experience but while Standee says its good by Hull standards, I have eaten all over the country and I think its one of the best pre 20 quid meal I have had in a resturant.

Standee can be a patronizing bore at times, although at other times I agree with him 100%.
The Boars Nest [iwas[/i excellent, and was listed in the national Good Food Guide [inot[/i the HDM one as Standee suggests. It was pricey at first and the food was quality. Unfortunately, it was rarely full, probably because of the reasons cited by the owners for the move. They felt the need to bring prices more in line with the rest of Prinny Ave and the quality dropped. Simple as that.
There are several nice restaurants still in Hull, notably Cook's Endeavour owned and cheffed by by the bloke who previously had Venn, which was, of course, Michelin starred like the Pipe and Glass . As Standee distances himself from evreything Hull, including, it now seems, the rugby, he wouldn't know that, though.

on the two occasions I have been it was more than £20 per person.
Anyway, it wont succeed at Rudstone, too much and better competition. And I haven't heard of Cooks Endeavour, where is it?
by the way, a Michelin Star doesn't awlays guarantee quality in my experience.

| Personally i wont miss the toasted goats nipple in a white wine and ostrich ar$e hair reduction serving type of gaff! Its full of champagne charlies on lemonade wages types pretending to be something that they are not, nor will never be! Its Princess Avenue for christ sakes not bloody Mayfair. GET A GRIP PEOPLE ITS WEST HULL where normal working class people went to the Boulevard, had a few pints of dodgy ale and sung obscenities at opposing fans and players alike, what's happening to us???

Quite right... if someone wants good food, go to London. The people of Hull should only have fish & chips, fry ups, turkey twizzlers, and maybe a roast dinner on a Sunday.

Down Scale Lane, next to Manchester Arms. I only noticed it the other day.. Everyone I've spoken to has spoken highly of it, and so I've been meaning to give it a try for a while now...
Personally, I've only ever been to Boar's Nest twice. Once was the evening set price menu, and two courses for £18 was excellent. Been there for an Xmas party before too, and it was excellent.
It'll be missed for me...

Cook's Endeavour is pretty good and the building it's in is excellent and historic. I've seen some negative comments about lack of choice especially for vegetarians but as a carnivore I loved it. Had a fantastic steak there.

I have never eat at the Boars Nest but was so suprised when the owner/chef felt he needed to have a go about his location on Princes Ave in the HDM - He had a freebie advert in a local Glamour Magazine saying where the Boars Head was moving to and there was no mention about Drunkards in his reason for moving. A car ride for all you Hullites me thinks if you can find it.

Will definitely try it when we next get chance, how far in advance do you generally need to book, is it a fairly small place?

Its down Scale Lane next door to Manchester Arms.
Its owned by Martin Andrews (an Aussie) who also does the cooking.
Its only small so you do usually need to book for a Friday or Saturday night. During the week you can maybe turn up and walk in but I would ring to check if they are open first because sometimes Marty only seems to open if he feels like it!
