You are now asking the big question, what is success worth?
If you could run a business at a profit, and spend the maximum minimum (ie:salary cap) and keep the dividends coming, why would you increase your cost base?
When a club wins, where does the money go? (Id wager it goes to players and other staff, with a small % as profit)

as fans, NO
as a business, I'd be taking the reliable options, we have to remember, our board is made up of people that invested in Gateshead and got lucky.

| I think that the point someone was making about Brian Smith in another thread was great coaches can make average players look great. I wonder if players like Goulding, Carmont, O Loughlin etc would look good in our side, I don't remember people saying how great they were last year when Nobby was in charge.
On the other side look how our coach wastes Wille Manu now, all we try to do with him now is try to batter his way through the opposite side centre, he doesn't run any other lines, its so predictable the other team is prepared for it, true Willie is so strong sometimes he still does break the line but with a runner that strong imagine what better coaches would do with him.
I'm with Mrs B on this one, look at how Nathan Brown and Mick Maguire changed the fortunes of their teams and personel didn't dramatically change from one coach to another. Yes getting a proper halfback will improve things but I still can't see how we will compete with the likes of Leeds, Saints, Wigan and Warrington and, as shown against Rovers, we still wont be able to complete against a side that mounts a strong defence as we can't break them down and score enough points.

Why is it a risk ? Its not like we would need to pay a new coach millions of pounds, sure it would eat into profits but even if we don't make an extra penny in revenue with the profits turned the last few years it wouldn't turn it into a loss.

who said it was a risk?
The fact is, we could increase what we spend, but it wouldn't generate the same amount of income, Hul FC is a business, nothing else (to the power people), we have to accept that as fans.

| Quote: Standee "As much as I wish we had a different coach I think people are being unfair, would having Anderson at the helm stop Long getting injured, cure Horne's diabetes etc.?
Agar is under contract, he is, wether we like it or not, our coach for 2011 at least, and, as some have alluded to, his replacement is likely to be Andy Last, I guess we just have to "deal with it"'"
I think most fans are in agreement that we at least need a new half back (either as first choice or cover) to be successful under any coach.
however I still feel Anderson would turn some of the narrow defeats of last season into wins, which in turn would have meant a top4 finish, and two bites at the playoff. Also Agar has shown time after time he can't come up with a decent game plan for big games. The last 'big' games we played well in was the CC Semi and Final (was good considering the side we put out) of 2008 IMO, since then we've consistently failed to turn up for big games.

Signing a big name coach of Anderson's caliber in the off season would add a good 2k+ to the season pass sales IMO. I feel at the moment we are going to have a slight decrease in passholder numbers for the first time since the KC move, due to the negativity about the Rovers defeat and lack of signings for next season, and we don't have the salary cap space to make a big name player signing to change that.

Beg to differ. Let's say we get a coach costing £100k more a year than Agar, whatever that is and he gets us to a final. Challenge Cup Final appearance is worth £250k to us according to Rule taking into account the merchandise sales, competition money etc, and that's before increased attendances for the following season. I can't see why we don't/won't go for a top class coach in that context.

Back into the club. New training facilities. Academy. Directors won't be able to take a dividend for years anyway due to our negative P&L reserves.

| Quote: Mrs Barista "I'm an accountant, and like the fact we're making money. But in the days of the salary cap when the worth of all squads at the full cap is much of a muchness, it's not rocket science to establish that the coach is the key differentiator. Chuck in the fact that we still have untapped potential in terms of attendances (If we were top of the tree, I reckon we could average 15,500 ish) and the fact that when we do get to a final the retail turnover goes through the roof, and I just don't understand why we don't go for a world class coach as, if he were successsful, it would pay for itself.
I've posted this a lot on these boards over the last few years and e-mailed the same to James Rule who said he disagreed about the coach being the differentiator and in his opinion it was the squad. I'm not cynical, I can just see it happening that Nathan Brown is OOC at Huddersfield next season, there are no standout British coaches to target and Daniel Anderson is in all likelihood out of a job. With Ken Davy there propping up eye-watering losses already, why wouldn't he make Anderson an offer if he wants to take an already very good Huddersfield team to the next level? In the meantime we'll muddle through with Agar, maybe scrape the 8 given the improvements others have made and have a big turnover of marquee players for another "Season of Promise II" in 2012. Won't stop me going, as supporting FC is what I do, but compare the shape and cohesion of Wigan this year vs last and it's very frustrating. Until the penny drops that you a top drawer coach is required to deliver silverware at this level and a plan is put in place to get one, the most success we can hope for is a top 4 finish and a lucky run in the cup IMO. Bit depressing but there you are.'"
This is basically the argument I was saying for the last three years of Cullen's reign at Warrington, ie we had everything ready on and off the field, including a top squad, the only factor missing was a top coach.
However in Wire there was a lot of support for Cullen, so there were always counter arguments, "Injury crisis", "he needs experienced backroom staff around him", "its not the coach its the team, the coach doesn't drop balls or miss tackles", "too many pension hunting Aussies like Monaghan and King"
Eventually we got Tony Smith in, the injury crises cleared up, James Lowes became a great assistant coach, the team stopped dropping balls and missing tackles, and the pension hunting Aussies became two of the best players in SL. We also won two Challenge Cups.

Do you honestly believe there is any appetite to invest, I dont see it, we hear all the right noises and nothing happens, we'll keep paying buttons for Ionians and putting positive spin in the media.
