[size=85:2i96kzio]We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.[/size:2i96kzio]:14109.jpg |

| Quote: Amadeo Avogadro "He was the best player to wear the Hull shirt for a very long time. Incidentally, how long were Topliss or Sterling here?'"
Topliss was at Hull 4 years, in that time the team reached 6 finals and won the Challenge Cup.
Peter Sterling was at Hull for 2 years, and in that time the team reached the Challenge Cup Final, only to lose out to Wigan in 1985.

To me a legend is someone who's influence goes above and beyond what happens on the pitch. The only 2 Hull FC legends IMO are Jack Harrison and Johnny Whiteley'"
so Sullivan isnt a legend then, or Norton, Drake etc etc on the list of about 50 legends I could think of ??

| The term Legend is as noted overused sometimes but there have been a few at FC since the end of the war that would fit into that class nicely

So only one actual trophy win, then? And he was playing in what was arguably a better team, too.
Quote: Newsom 13 "Peter Sterling was at Hull for 2 years, and in that time the team reached the Challenge Cup Final, only to lose out to Wigan in 1985.'"
And no trophies for Sterling.
Jason Smith is certainly worthy of the same status as these two. If you think Sterlo and Toppo are legends (not saying you do, by the way), then Smith is as well. He might have been unlucky with injuries and, in his first season, wasn't surrounded by quality, but when he was fit he was absolutely amazing.

I think a look in the history books is required here. David Topliss captain from 81 to 85. In that time we won all but the premiership.
Sterlo certainly won at least the Yorkshire cup. Which whilst by today's standard would have ben classed as a minor trophy I am sure. Every cup then was a big deal.

There's legends, favourites and unsung heroes:
Legends - the likes of Sullivan, Knocker
Favourites - the Mick Cranes and Motus of this world
Unsung heroes - Tony Grimaldi, McMenemy and the like

Yeah I know - keeping it to two a piece was tough. I really wanted to put Chris Davidson in the favourites because I used to really liked the way he played the game - but I don't know if he was actually any good because I was so young that I probably wasn't fit to judge.... unlike now.... hem hem

I certainly know that. Every cup victory was celebrated in style in our household. Especially the Sterlo YC final in which he ran the show. I believe Mal Maninga was the star of the Lancashire Cup final that year. Legends of the game playing in finals in the UK. Not only that but the beeb covered them as well generating national coverage which we would kill for today.

| Legend in the true meaning of the word is someone who is spoken about decades after they have been gone, Whitely, Norton,Bunting can easily fit in this category.

More or less exactly what I was going to say. Whitely, Knocker, topliss, Sterlo certainly fit the bill and I think I would add Swain and Rich Horne to that list. Smith was fantastic for his first 2 seasons here, but it grated on me a bit when he "retired" cos his body couldnt take the hits and then went and played another 3 years in the NRL for the Coeboys and the Raiders.
I will consider this some more as to whether there are any more to add. Raynor does not fit the bill though, athough he was very good.
