| Quote: His Bobness "Getting to the final was a good achievement and of course not at all disappointing especially since you won very difficult games in the quarters & semis. The nature of the cup is that just one or two good performances can get you all the way there but you didn't exactly have an easy draw so well done.
But was the leadership of Ellis such a crucial factor? It didn't seem that way to me but you see a lot more of him than I do, maybe his presence has inspired others.
In his career Ellis has often led by example but for me he isn't a natural leader of men, has he ever captained a team before?
Whatever, I think the question being asked here is about his playing contribution. I thought the idea about making him a marquee signing was that he would be a stand out player not just for Hull but in the whole of Super League. We were after all told that Hull were 'making a statement' by signing him.
Personally I don't think he has lived up to expectations at all or anywhere near. He's a tough player and defends well but you've quite a few others who do that. I think you lost a lot more with the departure of Manu than you gained from signing Ellis.
Ellis missed a lot of last season in Australia through injury he's missed a lot of this season through injury he even looks to have visibly aged since he came to Hull. Some players like Jamie Peacock seem to mature like fine wine but to me Gareth Ellis is very clearly a player in decline. It'll be interesting to see if he is selected for England for the world cup surely on form he won't be although most likely he won't be fit anyway.
Like I say you see a lot more of him than me and if you are happy with the value you are getting then really that's all that counts. Either way he'll be taking up a good chunk of your salary cap for a good while yet.
Well done on getting to the final you fully deserved it after beating Catalans & Warrington.'"
ellis was immense in the semi and was probably my MOTM.
I don't know how much we're paying him but I suspect that his value to the club and his fellow team members goes way beyond 80 minutes each weekend

Saw him interviewed on Sky one week and it was patently obvious that he would be a great person to have around the club for the younger players to look up to. Exudes the calm, unaffected confidence that sets the truly great professionals aside from the rest. Kearney-esque.

If you are judging Value for Money, presumably you have to divide a Club's Revenue by the Players Salary, as a players investment will contribute to both on and off-field earnings.
Assuming Ellis is our top earner, I'd assume his value (HFC Rev/Salary) is still favourable compared with many other players in the league. For example, I'd rate Dobson as very valuable to Rovers, but I'd be surprised if his actual return is very much higher than Ellis.

| I think Ellis gives us a confidence in defense when he's on th pitch. For all our poor offensive work on saturday, our defense was superb!! If we can take that with us into next season, we have a real shot at top 4.

Spot on. Anyone disappointed by anything other than the fact he's missed a few games with injury (which can happen to anyone) is so because of their own over-expectation.

I think that's a valid point to discuss. He's a great role model and judging by what players have said he clearly inspires his teammates with his actions, but I do wonder how he is as a 'talker'. He comes across fairly well in interviews, but that's not always an accurate indicator of how well it comes across on the pitch. Wasn't he captain before leaving Wakey, too?
As for what he's offered as a player, IMO when he's been fully fit and sharp he's been very good, at times excellent. Immense in defence, but will never shine in an attack that misfires as often as ours does. The only reason Manu could at times was because of his freakish strength forcing things to happen, but really the fact that he could do that was probably more papering over the cracks in our attack rather than being the solution to our problems.
