Quote JobsForTheWives="JobsForTheWives"Melbourne Storm have been doing exactly that for a few years.A huge chunk of their Cap is used to keep Smith,Slater and Cronk. The reason they couldnt keep Widdop was because of Cap restrictions. They then fill in the rest of the team with average NRL talent,Veterans like Rose who they have just signed from Manly, and up and coming youngsters who wont be on big money.
Now i am not saying that is what Salford are trying to do but it is a proven model.'"
It's a proven model within reason. The NRL also has a bigger cap than us, as well as much bigger sponsorship deals and certain exemptions. For you just to match Sandow's salary you'd be in the region of £300k. If Chase is then on even 2/3rds of that you've already gone through nearly 1/3rd of your cap on 2 players, and for a number of years.
Also remember that whilst Melbourne might have been doing it for a few years, they were conveniently ignoring the cap for most of it.
