1: A warm welcome for the four new lads.
2: Good recognition for Horney.
3: I'd like to see us play with more desire, commitment, a clue, pride, effort etc etc etc.
4: No injuries

I understand what Standee is saying, but I don't agree. If we were playing anyother team then I wouldn't really give one. But, were not, were playing our arch rivals, both fielding full teams, infront of 15,000 fans.

If we get smashed, pick up a couple of injuries, play as we did last season, then there goes the feel good factor that's been building. Beat them comfortably, show signs that the problems of last year are on the mend and keep everyone fit, then bring on 2010 and a 3,000+ army of black and whites heading to Knowsley Road

Hear what your saying about injuries (unless its the opposition of course) after the last couple of years we can well do without however i cant remember in 40 plus years of watching that there has ever been a meaningless match against them over there!!!

Rovers being in the hole that they are is enough to crow about, for some time to come!

No such thing as a meaningless match, just like there's no such thing as a meaningless training session, team bonding session, community event, etc. No matter what the reason, when they're representing a professional organisation they should be just that, professional. This is what seperates the champion players/teams from the rest, and would probably go a long way towards explaining our 'performances' over the past couple of years.

If friendlies were a complete waste of time then clubs wouldn't play them. The revenue generated by a typical friendly isn't really that significant.

Having a couple of full games ahead of the season start does help to knit the pre-season work together and get some of the cobwebs blown out before the serious stuff starts. As long as it's kept to just one or two games the benefits are worthwhile.

Of course, playing too many friendlies adds nothing to preparation for the season and significantly increases the risk of injuries - as we've found out in the past. No club with any sense would have an extensive programme of friendlies nowadays...
