He played in the halves in the Sheffield warm up (not the same admittedly) and didn't impress then either. He is 24 now and my point is when will he impose himself on games in a way which will stamp his authority ? Don't get me wrong I would love it to be this Friday and lots of games thereafter it's just that this idea of him being the pivot we need at loose man pre-supposes he is a good pivot player and I'm not sure I've seen that often enough to agree.'" I would tend to agree with you but TBF to Washy he hasn't really had the chance to make 13 his own for a long time now, it's just not how we play anymore.

I kind of agree with you and I'm struggling to think of many games when he had a standout performance. He had plenty of potential when he came into the side but hasn't really kicked on, for a variety of reasons, which tends to be the way at this club.

| Is now a good time to point out that when the sides were read out on Sunday Washy was named at 6 and Horne at 7. I know Washy tried to play something more resembling a scrum halfs role but was this because he had taken it upon imself to do so with Horne being so uncreative? Who actually played 7 on Sunday?

These days I think 6 and 7 is interchangeable even down to who puts the ball in the scrum. 7 tends to be the first receiver but not always. As much as anything it's the directing of play that is important and it would appear no one was really doing that on Sunday as you imply.

| Quote: PAUL M "It's interesting to note that when people are slagging off the side and particularly the creative players that Fitzgibbon is getting no stick. Don't get me wrong his workrate does not deserve any but like I said at the start of the season, he will do the same job as Radford did at 13, an extra battering ram. People said I was wrong but so far he has not helped the halves out whatsover and imo he should be playing in the backrow with either Manu or Tickle and Washbrook should then be at 13 which would offer an extra pivot to go with Tansey, Horne and Long. This would mean that Lauaki, Tickle or Manu could miss out or we could just drop Houghton off the bench and have two backrows and two props on the bench.
Either way the 13 role from last year has not changed despite everybody saying Fitzgibbon would add more. yes he adds more quality in the work he does but it's the same role.'"
I've said all along washbrook should be LF and fitz 2nd row. We shouldn't really have signed another back rower but you can understand them wanting to bring someone of fitz's standing in.
As it is we have good quality SL players sat in the stands because we have too many forwards and we have no cover at HB and not enough quality in the 3/4's

| Quote: Staffs FC "I'm not sure how many people thought Fitz would come in and start spraying the ball around from loose man. Don't remember too many suggesting he would be the ultimate ball player ala Jason Smith and alike. What he has done is massively improve the quality of the pack with his outstanding work rate and quality in everything he does do. I would say that he has helped out the halves - his dummy running and the lines he runs are top quality with Manu's try at Saints being a good example.
The player that most concerns me is Washbrook. Admittedly he hasn't played at loose man and has only played one game this season, but this idea that he can go into loose man and become the extra ball playing pivot lacks any evidence to back it up. Another good chance to impress on Sunday passed him by. When is he going to take his chance and put in a match winning MOM performance ? My point is that he hasn't shown enough to suggest he can be the ball playing 13 even if we decided to play with one.'"
Washbrook isn't a massively creative nor and organiser. he shouldn't be anywhere near the halves. He does have the occasional creative input into a game and his workrate is excellent which is why I'd play him at LF. You wouldn't lose too much in defence and he would offer another option in attack

We just have too many 2nd rowers. Squad balance isn't right as was highlighted pre season by pretty much anyone who looked at it

Think that will be rectified during the coming off season. At least I hope so.
The squad was so badly broken that fixing it in one off season simply wasn't possible IMO.

Agreed and I think we have enough evidence now to suggest he shouldn't be played there in the future. As to whether he is good enough to oust one of Tickle and Manu (Fitz must play) from the back 3 that is a big call. When Tickle leaves at the end of this season his money should go on a top back as you say.

We have 11 players OOC at the end of the year so a big opportunity to make any necessary changes.

Not so sure on that anymore, in the 2 games so far this season his tackling has been poor IMO. He tends to go too high now and bounce off the tackle. He missed 4 tackles on Sunday which isnt great.

| James Smailes from the HDM has said he will be at training this lunchtime and will ask Agar why he has left Tansey out of the squad for Friday, he will post his reply this afternoon.

Will be interesting to see what the reply is or whether Agar/The Club try and avoid it. For me they do not have give full details just simply state injury, disciplinary or other reason. Saying nothing will just add to the rumour and speculation and in some ways undo some of the good feeling between the fans and club after the much improved communication by the club.
Just think it is very strange that no statement/reason has been made after all the info that has been giving by the club and the introduction of Captains log and Coaches Blog etc
