Quote: PAUL M "I understand that the club want to reward Sam with a longer more lucrative contract but other clubs might offer silly money, ie more than the going rate to try and tempt him away. It's about the balance of a squad at the end of the day.

Long was a proven world class half so there is no contest.

Who says Hull are doing it on the cheap as you are implying? For instance he may be on £40k and Hull might think a rise to about £70-80Kand a three year deal is a good offer. Another club with more cap to use might offer £90-100k over three years.

For me £100k for a prop (considering you need 5 of them) is silly money unless you are talking someone of the quality of Ogre, Peacock, Morley and Graham etc.

I don't know the figures but I believe Hull are offering more money, but some clubs might have the capacity to offer more (again I don't know this) and this may turn Sam and his agents head?'"

Longy was a h/back who was only offered a 1 yr contract by his club, we threw silly money at him.
I am not implying that we are doing it on the cheap!, I doubt very much another clubs offered would be any where near 100k!, and I hope our offer would not be any-thing like that, my point is I would not lose him for the want of 10-15k...
I understand the cap and capacity, I also understand Horney has a big wage and a few others who do not warrant it imo.

This is the problem imo, poeple think they know who are earning what and then assuem that others are getting paid low wages in comparison. I don't think anyone really know what people are on despite what they might say. There may be the odd player who people know about at best.

All I know is Hull want him to stay and are prepared to improve his contract. However another club could offer more depending on their cap position and that won't mean Hull did not want him or offer him a good deal.

Horne will have to take a significant drop in salary i would imagine,if he wants to stay, and with all the options we will have next season, don't think he is in a position to demand a large wage?I'm hoping Danny Nicklas can get a chance at 6.Also perhaps Heremaia,Obst etc can/will play at 6?

Sam has developed well and deserves a 2-3 year deal and a big pay rise.

However he's not a world beater or a match winner and if he does want "silly money" then its best to let him get it elsewhere.

contracted but looks very unlikely to feature next year 3rd choice hooker and potentially 5th choice half would it be better to get rid have more money to get a better forward or do we keep and have extra cover just in case.

The cap isn't so much of an issue with the size of Horney's wage, as only half of it counts. Guess it revolves more around how much Hull are prepared to reach into their pockets for him. Also, as other clubs don't have the "half-wage" luxury for him within their own caps, I think it would cost him dearly to move away from Hull.

No wonder he waxed lyrical about staying in the HDM last week! Luckily for him, I think he's a player Hull are prepared to dig deep for.

IIRC its 50% of salary upto a cap of 50K per team/per season and that is also spread (or can be spread) between players with 10 years behind them. Yeman will be in that category next season aswell I think, so the 50K may well go down to 25K off cap towards Hornes wage. Also its not free money, even though it doesnt count on the cap it still has to come from somewhere.

Yeamo started in 2002 so will be going into his 10th season, not sure if that covers it or he has to have played for 10 seasons.

Neither Sam or Ogre are going anywhere....
The club will sort Sam to his true market value and he will i am sure announce his extended deal shortly, however please remember that his true market value may be less than what some people believe on here!!
He is certainly no James Graham or Sam Burgess but is a cracking young prop making a name for himself with some strong drives and big hits and nothing more... he will be with us for a while yet!

Interesting. I know it's not "free" money, that's why I mentioned Hull having to dig deep regardless. I think they'll dig a bit deeper for him than most other clubs, though.

The worry is that certain clubs may pay more than the current "market value", though, given his potential and youth, in order to secure him for the long term. Would Hull do that?
