IMO
Thompson - McRAE (Howes)
Paleasina - Motu Tony.
Totally forgot that Radford & Tony had played recently together at Hull RU. - hmmmm.

| If Radders is the answer, then the question is wrong IMHO.
No idea who we should get but to sack an unproven assistant (who's appointment lots thought was a bad move) and replace him with errrr, an unproven assistant would be just perfect

Is Hodgson the new Griffin, or is it all about pace?: |

I know it's been a long day, but why are all "assistant coaches" unacceptable?
It's been mentioned on here for years, but certainly a lot in the last couple of days.
Radford, for example, has been coached or has coached for 25 years.
Isn't that long enough to understand what the job entails?
It's just a game of rugby, when all said and done.

I've not said they are, but the ing and moaning on here recently has been about Gentle only being an assistant before he joined us. Why, if this is bad, are some suggesting that Radford would be any different?

| Genuine question. When did Last start his coaching career with us and what are his notable successes in our junior development? I seem to recall that there has been a fair bit of criticism about the falling off of apparently good young local talent in that intermediate period between junior and first team rugby? Apart from a great work ethic and absolute desire for the club to succeed what are his credentials to take us forward as an assistant coach?

I am not ambivalent in terms of Radford's ability as coach with regard to imparting skills, as our defence coach this season he has demonstrated he's a great teacher.
It's the rest of it, the man-management and diplomatic decision-making bit, I'm worried about. I like Radders - a lot - but I wish he was arriving as Head Coach with a few years' experience elsewhere under his belt.

They aren't.
But for us, we've promoted or imported unproven assistants for nearly 10 years now. We need someone with experience and a track record to put systems in place for success.

What has being coached got to do with coaching? All that means is he's turned up to training and follower instructions.
A coach has to put systems in place for development from top to bottom. Session plan for short, medium and long term. Recruit players. Just naming a few.
A top coach needs to come up with his own ideas.

| Assistant coaches here are not willing to do the apprenticeship required to be a solid head coach. You only have to look at how long Bellamy did at Brisbane and McGuire at Melbourne to see what is required. Unfortunately over here society says you should demand things as quick as possible, whether you deserve or are ready for it. Radford will make a good, solid head coach one day but surely it's too soon.

Or the Australian coaches go home early and were left with no experienced assistants.

It's about having the required impartiality to make good decisions. In simple terms, if you get put in charge and asked to trim 2 jobs from your former workgroup, would you cut loose 2 of your lazy mates you've known for 6/7 years, or a couple of recent guys whom work their nuts off but nobody is particularly keen on yet? The people who are principled enough to do the former are a rare breed.
