Listened to the first 10 mins of Sportstalk tonight. They drafted a proper journalist in for comment who said it was too ironic that on the day a top marketing journal dismissed Allam's claims on the effectiveness of a Tigers rebrand as nonsense, the application was lodged with the FA. Simon Clark was asked twice at the start by Matt Dean what he actually thought about it and dodged the issue altogether, pointedly reminding callers to keep comments legal if they phoned in. I've really no idea what Allam's trying to achieve here, lost the thread of it.

The thing is the tiger brand has been there all the while he has owned the club, so why hasnt he already tried to market it?

Originally I thought it was about the stadium. Now, pure ego and pure dummy spittery. No one in their right mind raises the name change issue, then circa one month later goes through with it officially knowing full well the level of local and national opposition. It's pure madness. The fa will not sanction this I am sure and he will leave city in a mess. Feel sorry for the none rugby hating fans.

Good piece in telegraph from Jim White today

Which marketing journal is this in? Would be interested to know their thoughts.

While the move to change the name with the FA doesn't surprise me, the timing is ridiculous, coming just a few days before a home game live on SKY. Its like he wants a riot on TV or something!?

Just a thought - If a new owner lined up for the club wants the name change with none of these issues associated with them? Long shot I know...

The article is in Marketing Week - branding-goes-to-hull-in-a-handcart

Last 2 paragraphs sum it up;
All this illustrates one of the most important points about brand management – how you enact a strategy is often just as important as the strategy itself. Much of the “marketing theory” being quoted by Mr Allam is, quite frankly, nonsense, but the one area he has completely failed to grasp is brand engagement.

The lesson for other marketers intent on radical changes like rebranding or repositioning is that the more ambitious and dramatic the proposed strategy, the more gentle and engaged a marketer must be to ensure the strategy is first accepted and then executed correctly.

Just listened to the Humberside programme from last night, why do they bother having that Simon Clarke on, he's running scared from the first moment to the last he daren't pass an opinion at all and is wary of anyone who does, unless they are siding with Allam!! Thats how I heard it anyway!

He is not a "Dr" anyway. he has an honorary degree , and custom and practice is NOT to use the title bestowed in that way.

Steve Prescott got the same degree at the same time as Allam.

He didn't go around calling himself Dr Prescott, despite being 100 times the man that Allam is.

It so makes you appreciate what you have got in Mr Pearson and even Mr Hugnell owners that put their clubs first before personal ego.

I think dropping the word City is just another dig at Hull CC for not giving him the ground and land, thing is now I am beginning to feel he is having a pop at me for being born in the City of Hull.

Sort of, he basically said because he couldn't get the ground (and build his sports village) he had to find other sources of revenue such as changing the name. He thought this would get the City fans behind him and they would lobby the council on his behalf.

Instead its just backfired and people have realised what a idiot he really is!
