| Long memories abound. I think most were aggrieved by the way his move was "engineered", while on tour down under with GB, with Maurice Bamford said to have been coaxing him to ask for a move to Leeds. Of course, he was a phenomenal player, for both clubs and his debut season was sensational, as he bagged well over 30 tries. I actually like him, he doesn't shy away from painful conversations and is blunt when he is asked a question, sometimes too much, but never PC for the sake of it, like some.

| I don't have an issue with him but he's a bit before my time.
He used to be on the forty20 podcast, before covid and the problems with his eye. I take what he says about the modern game with a pinch of salt, but he's good value when he speaks about his era and the stuff they used to get up to.

| Quote: giddyupoldfella "Why don't the FC fans like Garry Schofield?
He was great for FC and he's the greatest British player I ever saw. I don't like that he's not loved by the FC faithful, he's one of our greatest. We should welcome him back into the game and give him an ambassadors role at our club. He's one of the greatest. Whether you like him or not, you surely must respect the fella?'"
As an older statesman on here, Schofield’s story has been done to death and I’m surprised it’s been regurgitated. I wouldn’t describe him as a legend because that would put him in the same category as Johnny Whiteley and others of his ilk!!!!! To many, he was the original Judas and still is. I well remember him goading FC fans in the Charleston club after games. He’s made a living since retiring by being an “outspoken journalist” often embarrassing himself and others.
Yes, he was an outstanding performer but put coin before club and fan loyalty. I know it’s a short career but he went about engineering his transfer to Leeds in completely the wrong manner and it won’t be go forgotten by me, ever.

The bit in bold is a perfect summation for me. No fan of the club would begrudge any player moving on to another club as Leeds at the time were a much better option in terms of club in general and financially than Hull. It was the way he went about getting the move and you only have to look at the difference in the way that Schofield is thought of compared to that of Crooks.

| I wouldn’t call him a Hull FC Legend.
Schofield was a great player. I’ve been watching Hull since the mid-70’s and if I was picking my greatest Hull team of players I have seen, he would be one of my Centre’s without hesitation.

| The comparison of how he and Crooksey left the club back then (to generate a quarter of a million to save us from folding) is a case of chalk and cheese. One a bloke who refused to go and who only left when the situation the club was in was explained to him and then he went kicking and screaming and who was always loyal to our club even when he wasn't playing for us and another who brokered his own deal behind the clubs back was insulting to fans including myself in their faces, badmouthed the club when he got to Leeds and even allegedly returned his club car with water in the petrol tank. No hero for me I'm afraid, I love to watch talented players like himbecaise he was, lets face it (if you ever saw him in Black and white) the master of the interception but I also expect a bit of loyalty some integrity and a bit of style from my heroes.

| Think most posters know why he would never be regarded as a legend, went on tour a Hull player came back a Leeds player. Just a coincidence Maurice Bamford was running the side.Great player but liked to bad mouth the club, compare him to somebody like Tom Briscoe who left the club and still has the respect of the fans.

| I disagree. He is a Hull FC legend regardless of how he left. Over 100 tries and around 200 goals. If Bunting had started him at Wembley in 1985 or brought him on earlier we'd have won the Cup I reckon.
There are two sides to every story. I think he and Crooks were both put out at how much the club were paying Gary Pearce.

If you can’t take the word of supporters who were around at the time and experienced Schofield’s vitriol, then go ahead with your conspiracy theories
As Wilf has already alluded to, Lee Crooks had to be forcibly removed from The Boulevard, kicking and screaming but don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Oh and by the way, it was Lee who got hold of Casey when he had Pearce up against the changing room walls at half time, and probably led to Lee’s demise!!!!

I was around at the time, thanks, I just don't live in the past like some others.
Hilarious that you accuse people of conspiracy theories then post your own

I remember Crooksy was very upset to leave Hull, he literally lived for the club and never settled or produced his best at Leeds.
I'd heard similar about him and Casey but as always, it was never officially announced that it had happened and I thought it was probably just a story that had been added to over time, although I hated Casey as coach, despite him being a previous player for us, my memories of him were as a Rovers hardman, who was in reality, a cheap shot merchant and never squared up to the real hardmen of the game at that time, Fred Ah Kuoi actually gave him a good one when Casey was sent off and pushed the touch judge, ruining his chance of captaining GB down under if memory serves me well.

No conspiracy theory, horses mouth. The incident led to Casey’s sacking, he went on to run a b&b in Cumbria after vacating The Buccaneer in Brough.

Schofield was a prolific try scorer.
Yes he did come on late in that 1985 Cup Final and missed 2 or 3 conversions from our late flurry of tries. Not easy kicks, but Marc Sneyd would have kicked them all in his sleep (Crooks/Schofield missed five kicks between them that day!) Therefore, Schofield could have still changed the game in our favour.
