| I'm happy with Phelps in fact we should have signed him some time ago pre Tansey's departure because he gives us for a year what we were looking for , cover at 1 and across the three quarters as well as halfback if necessary. He's a seasoned professional and even had Tansey stayed would have freed him up to cover the halves and hooker. My only concern is that no matter which way you spin it Phelps was the only player left for us to sign and we're at least seen to have left doing so until there was absolutely no other option. I hope he proves that we were wrong to wait so long.

| Im surprised some are saying he is a better player than Tansey as alot on here had Tansey down as the next international full-back.
Phelps was in good form for Wigan untill his injury last season but the whole team at that time where on fire. Not sure he was that impressive in his first season for them though.
Good signing for FC as he will provide much needed cover throughout the backline. Not a signing that screams out ambition but a signing that is needed.
Unless someone else comes into the squad, I would find it highly unlikely that FC will be spending to the full cap, maybe the board are just looking at another decent profit for the year.

I didn't say you said it wasn't a good signing, I wasn't aiming that bit at you. I wanted a half back too, everyone on here and 99% of our fans wanted a half back as well but for whatever reason it hasn't happened, we do still have cover available there but since Tansey left we have no FB, I know Whiting could cover but Agar obviously wants to use him in the centre this year which makes sense. It was a neccessity to sign a FB and we have, not only that but he can cover around the squad too. No matter who we seem to sign, there's always people underwhelmed.

Something a lot of our fans never do mate, we signed Fitzgibbon and people where underwhelmed. Westerman, Sharp now Phelps - all had the underwhelmed tag. I, for one, am delighted with this one and look forward to seeing him next season.
Quote: berrigans bitch "Westerman wasn't available but we got him in the end, you have to aim high.
Delighted with the Phelps signing. He was excellent at wigan and was particularly good at fullback so I think he will be a like for like replacement for Tansey. He was underrated during his time at Wigan but SL fans but Wigan fans will tell you how good he was for them.
Also he can cover centre, wing and the halves. His best asset is linking into the line and also his distribution plus he plays with bundles of enthusiasm.'"
Spot on mate, sums this signing up perfectly for me. He's a FB but a FB who can cover around the squad too, not something you can pick up too often and a quality player too.

You are joking right?
Westerman and Sharp coming in this season have everyone on a high and I have read nothing but positives about the pair on here. Same with Fitzgibbon and O'Meley, if you ask me players get over-hyped on here, e.g. Tansey.

| i'm pretty pleased with the signing of cameron phelps, he's nippy with a good rugby brain and a model pro, not a world beater but has the talent to shine at hull, i think he is the ideal replacement for tansey. i agree we still need a decent half back tho, and if the sammut deal has fallen through can't see it happening now.

1. Those people are tapped. Our lack of creativity blinded people to his obvious flaws. Phelps is a better player no question.
2. Maybe we have had problems signing someone? I dont think the club need to be spending under the salary cap to be making a profit anyway.

In his first season Phelps was brought in as a utility back, played occasionally at centre and although he wasn't bad his tackling technique meant he got ko'd a couple of times at the start. After that he was in and out on the wing until he finally got a run at FB when Mathers left with the Gleeson deal. From then until the end of the season he played very well at FB, he's more of a Hodgson type fullback where he can come in and act as another HB when required, was very effective at the end of last season, so much so that he got the number 1 shirt I think (?). Started the season there but got a pretty bad injury, during which time Roberts was on fire and then Tomkins took the role.
As others have said, if he was English, he'd still be with us IMO. I'd say play him at 6 or 1 (decent kicking game as well) and you'll be onto a winner.

The FC fans will love this, a new 'pivot full-back'
Not sure if he would be tbh, you have numerous players who can cover full back and with the quality of players like Charnley coming through Im not surprised he was released by Wigan.
